WEST VANCOUVER Police
officers are being paid. by
{CBC to pull over cars in a
weekend CounterAttack pro-
gram that began in July.

West Vancouver Police have
checked about 24,000 cars since the
weekend © program's — inception.
‘Twelve motorists have been charged
with drinking-driving crimes.

ICBC spokesman Brian Geary
suid the insurance company will
spend $3 million for police ‘wages
and breath-testing equipment in 10
municipal police forces, including
West Vancouver Police (WVP), for
the five-month campaign.

.. “We expect to save around $6
million or roughly double the
investment,” said Geary,

“Weare not involved in it
because it dooks good. We are
involved in if to gel areturn on that
kind of investment.” he said.

Geary said the $6 millicn will be
saved by identifying drunk drivers
before they crash,

“Basically they are assigned to
do CounterAuack road blocks, and
obviously they will do anything that
arises out of those road checks such
as a stoten auto or drugs | in a vehi-
cle," said WYP Const, Paul Skelton,

The police officers set up a few
road checks within the municipality
throughout the night. WVP statistics
indicated that about 75 motorists

stopped have had 24-hour driving,

suspensions issued. .

Meanwhile the North Vancouver
RCMP have not aceepted [CBC's

“We don't allow: outside agen-

saying they (more impaired driver
cheeks). are not important,” said
Insp. Jamie Graham, second in
charge of the North Vancouver
RCMP detachment,

Graham said if he felt that more
impaired driving programs were
warranted, he would schedule staff
and pay then overtime, if necessary.

Geary said the summer counter
attack program was a pilot project.

impaired drivers in West Vancouver

Christmas program then begins.
