Council has referred a develop-
ment permit application for a
proposed synagogue to its
advisory planning commission
and advisory design panel.

Because of the nature of the pro-
ject, which would be located on
Taylor Way, Coun, Rod Day sup-
ported at the Dec. 5 meeting the
referral of the project to the plan-
ning commission. ‘

Planning director Steve Nicholls
explained that the synagogue build-
ing is allowed under existing zon-
ing. : . : ;

The Har El Synagogue is being
built by the North Shore Jewish
Congregation on a 1.7 acre vacant
lot bounaed by the Upper Levels
“Highway, Taylor . Way; and
Inglewood Private Hospital.

The Ministry of Transportation
and Highways has granted permis-
sion for access from Taylor Way.

The Ministry of Environment,
_ Lands and Parks has approved work
on Brothers Creek.) 2.

~The Department of Fisheries and
‘Oceans also approved changes to
the creek channel because improve-
ments to the fish habitat were
‘included in the project.

As the entire property is located
within West Vancouver's creek pro-
tection area, the district's director of
operations will have to approve any
works in the area,

He is asking tor a blanket creek
covenant that will limit the works
done.

The covenant would also hold
the district faultless from claims
should flooding occur.

The architect has asked the
municipality for several siting vari-
ances because of. the constraints
posed by the creek. A pedestrian
bridge would cross the creek, link-
ing the parking lot with the main
building. ‘
