Though our water is now clear, pub- ic understanding of the issue is as muddied as ever. There are, however, a number of Jessons we can take from recent events man the Capilano and Seymour watersheds. Chief among them is that land- tides are a normal occurtence in steep forested terrain. : The Seymour slide, for instance, occurred in un-roaded old growth forest. mo Claim that logging is somehow responsible is an affront to conimon sense. at’s more, an independent, three-year study in the Seymour recently con- pluded that logging was a contributing factor in just five of 1,200 landslides. The Capilano slide occurred in an area of deciduous forest logged near je turn of the century. The slope in question had recovered from a number of slides over the past BO years, only to slide again last month. It's a pattern often repeated in ature, and an example of the kind of natural disturbance that permits forests mao renew themselves. In fact, such landslides can contribute to forest biodiversity by providing bpenings for fast-growing deciduous trees that would otherwise be shaded put by conifers. _ It’s certainly true that logging activity — notably poor road-building — Free. 4 =o) phone. It’s equally true that envi- meonmentally sound fogging and well-engineered roads can maintain slope metability and water quality. That said, those opposed to any logging in the Capilano, Seymour and ‘oquitlam watersheds are certainly entitled to their opinion. What they aren’t entitled to do is deliberately mislead the public about the mmactors affecting our domestic water supply. mer, Patrick Moore meechair, Forest Practices Committee merorest Alliance of British Columbia BArt appreciation ‘(lasses needed ZeDear Editor: was described as the worst student. Boxing Made in Canada y Sale Now! m Recently I took my students on an ” iting that left a deep impression on "Friday afternoon is our art time, and Lonsdale Avenue seemed an xcellent studio for the lesson. maBesides we saw the first partially blue sky in quite a while. So, in small groups, these children meeawere Challenged to render a three- Mmadimensional world on their two- adimensional paper. They had to show perspective by drawing the many overlapping objects within their field of vision. I was so proud to see what consci- Beeacntious citizens they were. ‘ I watched them take their job seri- fjously, and take care of each other crossing intersections. From a distance, I saw them cour- teoucly give up their seats at bus stops. They thanked shop owners wito let them sit comfortubly shel- tered from the rain. Some curious mag PETSONS engaged students in conver- Mmmsation, and all were answered respectfully. : ‘The respect was not always mutual. B =I will never forget the look of ma incredulity on one 12-year-old’s face when an elderly woman told her “you'll never work for Disney.” Similarly, an 11-year-old report -d that a man in his mid 20s said, “I hate to tell you this kid, but your drawings a are No good.” # §6€©>- Both incidents reminded me of two examples I recently read about where famous people overcame put- 5 downs. Walt Disney was fired by a news- paper editor for lack of ideas, the sculptor Auguste Rodin failed at get- f ting into art school three times and Fortunately, Friday's put-downs were no match for the strength of my students’ self-worth. Just imagine how positive comments might affect such young citizens. If you encounter these students out there, enthusiastically making sense of their environment, share a smile. The way I look at it — at least the Davidsons had the money to buy lights, and they have the company of each other, and they were physically capable of putting up the lights.
