One, a California banker (nota teller, he owns the bank), Bud Burtz, was there for the second time this season. He, his buddy Mike and every other soul on Keith Fraser's floating lodge would be up four foggy, dark mornings ut 5 a.m. and head out into the half-light, like fighter pilots on dawn patrol. Six hours they trolled, and some morn- ings the sun never broke through. But they were warmed by Bob the cook’s hot breakfast as well as flasks of coffee and sandwiches. They came in smartly at lunchtime, downed a hearty meal, and were off again at 2 p.m. In the afternoons the sun generally broke through. Survival suits were peeled off, coolers yielded up cold beers, and spirits rose. The fish, however, didn’t always tum up. The anglers gritted their tecth, tried new locations, changed bait, and as the sun went down the boats straggled in. The first day or so it was slow. Then a 17-pound spring was landed, 21 followed, and a keen young man got the first tyee, a glorious 31- pounder. Coho and pinks were land- ing on the dock as well, and gencral manager Peter Hansen could sense another good week in the making. But not everybody was getting fish, including Bud. He and Mike would come back each evening, lock at the leader board and wonder when their turn would come. There was consolation when a big dish of nachos with cheese was delivered to a table on the dock, and the anglers had drinks and watched the sunset, Keith Fraser moves the lodge a couple of times a year to be near where the fish are running. Right now it is tucked away amid a maze of densely forested islands east of Telegraph Cove, base for whale- watching boats.
