Newton Legion right to expect guests to comply with rules of the house Dear Editor: Lam writing to you in the matter _ of the Newton legion dress code. Every culture and religion has its own rules as to what is or is not appropriate. Generally, it is expect- ed that a guest conform to the rules of the house he is visiting and if he cannot or will not respect the rules of the house, be it smoking, dress code, behavior or any other rules, he is well advised to stay away. 1 would not dream of entering a church or mosque in a bathing suit and would understand if somebody .- objected to someone else doing so. Have you ever tried to enter a syna- gogue with your head uncovered? We do not even have to go into religion. Most better restaurants and clubs have a dress code and you know what happens. when men go there without a jacket and tie. Nobody considers the above to be , discriminatory or racist. My point is that everybody, including the Newton legion, has a right to ‘set such a dress code as they see fit and people who do not wish to respect it can find other . places where they may feel more comfortable. People who do not _ like wearing jackets and ties can always go to McDonald's. Limiting this right limits our wonderful cultural diversity and definitely does not contribute to good relationships between various cultural groups. Let us respect the right of one group to wear head covering and request that on their premises, head covering be worn by all, as well as - the right of other groups to consider . -head covering indoors inappropri-* ate and request that it be removed. ._ Exceptions may be made by the host, but it should be his free deci- sion only, and not one extracted by force. Miss Manners would agree that the Newton legion had the right to expect any invited guest. who did ‘ not wish or could not comply with their dress code to simply send their regrets. This regrettable development smacks of abuse of hospitality and certainly does not contribute to the popularity of the guests in question. I am convinced that no such ridiculous scenes would happen if the roles were reversed. Zuzana Kulhankova ‘Vancouver ; -NVD Coun. looking forward ‘to working with new council Dear Editor: '° A heartfelt thank you to all the citizens who voted in the municipal elections on Nov. 20 ~- especially oe those who voted for me. “i Acspecial bouquet to those. who . worked on my campaign and who contributed their hard-earned dol- lars’ to help me. __* We now have a new council and T look forward to working with them to tackle the many challenges we face. There is no doubt in my mind that our community has the resources to tackle them successful- ly. BF, One of the immediate tasks will be to abolish ‘the Standing Committee system which has proven to be contentious, time-con- suming, inefficient, confusing to the public and, above all, undemoc- ratic. I will also promote a far greater role for the neighborhood commit- tees who, I believe, can playa key ‘role in shaping neighborhood and community livability. Qur re-elected mayor has expressed the desire to create an atmosphere of cooperation on council. | am extremely happy with this. Difficulties on district council in the last three years were not the result of philosophical differences or even differences in personalities as claimed during the election. They were in the main the result of consistent violations of democratic procedure in the last three years. Cooperation, based on adher- ence to democratic principles and mutual respect, is essential for any organization to function. ‘This will be better not only for council but also for senior staff. It will make it possible to restore council’s authority and leadership role and enable staff to concentrate on their duties. I look forward to a very produc- tive three years as your councillor. I would also like to thank all the can- didates who ran for public office ‘but were not elected. I was impressed by their calibre and | would urge them to continue to take an active part in the life of our - cherished community. It is wrong for an MP to theoretically be able to collect millions in pen- sion benefits for as little as six years’ worth of contributions. On Nov. 10 in Ottawa, | was asked to sign the form which would enrol me in the pension scheme. | declined to do so and wrote on the form that any deductions from my salary would be against my will. Despite my objections the 11% deductions are going to be taken ‘anyway and there is nothing I can do to prevent it. However, I am giv- ing my written commitment that | will ask only for return of my con- tributions plus 4% per annum. should ] become eligible to collect a pension. This promise will remain in effect until the present government agrees to change the scheme or until Reform has sufficient seats to sponsor the necessary changes. I would support a pension plan for MPs that is similar to the plans found in major corporations, That is, full benefits delayed until age 60 with some sort of reduced benefit for early retirement at age 55. Your readers can help us to get the pension plan changed by apply- ing pressure to the prime minister.
