Louise Aird BRIGHT LIGHTS HE VARIETY Club and St. Paul’s Hospital Children’s Projects were the beneficiaries of the pre-Indy Thunder Thursday party at the Trade and Con- vention Centre. Nice party, but a little low on energy for some reason. And at large parties it’s not ad- visable to spring Cajun cooking on people who aren’t expecting it. But the soup was great. Dal Richards and his orchestra were also excellent — it’s too bad people couldn't have been more polite and stayed to hear them. The usual media celebs were there, including BCTV’s Dusty Martell, who's the new Lotto MICHAEL AND Mario Andretti joined local celebs at the pre-Indy Thunder Thursday party for the Night in B.C. commentator, plus Pat Quinn and a stony-faced John Reynolds. Ran into North Van's Carey Fieldgate, manager of Parfait Fash- ions and daughter of famed foot- baller Norm, as well as Lori Rowe, the B.C. rep for sponsor Shiseido. The cocktail party was the most fun, although ! was at a loss for words (gasp) when speaking with Ross Bentley and Michael and Mario Andretti. What are you supposed to say to these guys? ‘‘Nice car’? “How do you like our roads?’ ‘’How’s your engine?” “‘l respect your driving ability’? ““What have you done with your $9.9 million in earnings?” “‘How’d you like to get married?” xkk* One of the nicest Saturdays I’ve had in ages was spent at Bowen tsland’s Bowfest '92. | went reluctantly, thinking it would be just another ‘‘fair- thing,”’ but it turned ovt to be hugely fun. I missed the parade, which was unfortunate because | hear it was great — it included the Queen, Michael Jackson, chickens from Doc Morgan’s Pub, Brian Mulroney hand-in-hand with George Bush, a 125th birthday cake for Canada, water-fighting firemen, and the GritMobile — a Liberal-red jeep blaring music from punk rockers the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Oh yeah, Pete was in the pa — Pete is the black lab who won the Golden Bone for Dog of the Year. MLA David Mitchell, sporting a University of Bowen Island T-shirt (UBI's motto is “‘in vino veritas’), was there with his freshly tattooed daughter Madi (the tattoo was temporary). jill Purdy, one of the original Bowenites, looked terrific as usual, as did the Waterfront Theatre’s Pam Williams and West Van's Basil Pantages, who finally seem: to be heeding warnings about UV rays — his tan this year is a paier shade of charcoal. I came dead last in the women’s nail-driving contest (| was thinking “nails” as in hanging pictures -— the contest involved eight-inch spikes and cedar logs), and chose not to participate in the Slug Race, which was won by Dustin Drews, Tim Gordon, Cory Stewart, Leigh Variety Club and St. Paul’s Hospital Children’s Projects. Wednesday, September 30, 1992 - North Shore News - 23 Bowfest on Bowen island. Stewart and their slug Fred. kkk We've lost another socialite. Jean Carlisle Irving, one of the least political, most easy-going, good-natured people | know, has left Canada for a two-year stint at her home in Mustique. 1 didn’t attend her going-away party. The idea of showing up at Spanish Banks with salad-in-arms just didn’t appeal to me. It has occurred to me that, con- sidering her generosity to numerous fundraisers, the prestige that her name has lent to several causes (including personal ones involving climbing, if you know what | mean) and the fact that so many have had the pleasure of her hospitality while in the Caribbean, her friends could have done something a little more elaborate than a potluck dinner for 30 expert small-talkers on a sandy beach — like she’s not going to get enough dinners on sandy beaches over the Photes Louise Aird d this year’s next two years.... kk North Van producer Tom Rowe is now chairman of the Theatre Street Youth Society, which sup- ports and organizes theatre pro- grams, plus counselling and train- ing. for kids who are at risk of dropping out of school. Thanks to fundraisers Hiroko Ainsworth, Nazi Khosrowshahi, Janet Stern, Pam Richardson and Lois Milsom, a tidy sum was rais- ed to help keep things going. It was a little incongruous to see Station Street lined with Mercedes and BMWs (I was parked behind the Ivanhoe) but inside the Station Street Theatre, we watched Cabaret Revolution, a perfor- mance by some of the kids, orga- nized by artistic director Paul Crepeau, and everyone had a very entertaining evening. The Vancouver Symphony’s Darlene Spevakow was there, by the way, with her daughter Shelley, who successfully pro- moted the Toronto performance of chameleon/comedienne/singer/ actress/sexual provocateur David Letterman’s wannabe lover San- dra Bernhard. Shelley has booked Bernhard’s “Giving Till It Hurts’ show into ‘the Queen Elizabeth Theatre Oct. 26 and you can be sure it'll be a sell-out so if you want tickets... ~ TIM GORDON proudly displays Fred, who won the slug race for Tim and friends at Bowfest *92.
