Merry Christmas!’ John Moore BOOK REVIEW The North has been a source of treasure; not delivered by a jolly red-robed teamster, bul sought and retrieved by men and women whose heroic struggles in the fur trade and gold rush gave birth to what we think of as the “Cana- dian spirit.” The North is our spiritual mother, whether we visit her or not. In that sense, the North is still rich; in its very emptiness, its wildness, in opportunities for adventure. Ken Madsen’s Tatshenshini Wilderness Quest is a roller- coaster kayak tour of one of the last wild rivers in North America, previously protected by its isola- tion in the Northwest corner where B.C. makes a :nenage a trais with the Yukon and Alaska Panhandle. Even read by a cosy fire, Madsen’s personal, diarist’s ac- counts of the “first descents” of these glacier-fed torrents are likely to bring on the urge for a long hot bath. An avid climber, river-runner aad environmentalist, Madsen makes no attempt to hide his agenda: the ‘quest’ of the title was a 1990 sponsored trip down the Tatshenshini River to raise awareness and funds for its preservation. Protected in Alaska by the Kluane National Park, the “Tar and its sister, the Alsek, are still threatened by a mega-project proposed copper-mine on the Ca- nadian side which menaces the precious salmon run on which al- ready beleaguered grizzlies and eagles depend. All proceeds from the book go toward the preservation of the Tatshenshini River. But you don’t have to wallow in a fibreglass tube through rapids the consistency and color of a root-beer Slurpee to experience plotting ‘circle routes’ and ‘cre- ative detours.’ if you‘ve never been north of Prince George, which is only the belly-button of B.C., after all, this book is a glove-box essential. | can already feel myself soaking in the Liard River hotsprings ...
