TRAVEL Follow the Royal | Family to Scotland LONDON —~ Come the summer, Canadians flock over here. But, after the rites of Henley, Ascot and Wimbledon, where does the Royal Family go? To Scotland. They take up residence for sev- eral weeks at the Queen’s private castle at Balmoral, three hours’ drive north of Glasgow, deep in the Highlands. However when Queen Victoria built Balmoral 140 years ago she forgot one thing — the indoor, heated swimming pool. So what do Princess Diana and her sister-in-law, Fergie, Duchess of York, do with their children while staying at Balmoral? They drive six miles up the road to Craigendarrech Hotel and Country Club, which bas two in- door poois and a water slide. At first the royal security men used to put the pools off limits to hotel guests, but Princess Diana had the ban lifted, and now the royals swim with the hotel guests. The pools are part of Craigen- darroch’s spacious country club, - which also has two squash courts, a snooker room, gym, solarium, sauna, steam room and health and deauty salon. - : Ail this is tastefully added on to a handsome red sandstene house built in the Isst century by the Keiller marmalade family of Dundee. . ’ Outside there is a tennis ccurt and dry ski slope. And just beyond the 29 acres of the estate is the River Dee, famous for its salmon fishing. Ballater Golf Club, just five minutes from the hotel, charges $24 for 18 very enjoyable holes and a warm welcome at the clubhouse, and there’s also pony ’. trekking and gliding nearby. * Ballater is a good base for ex- David Wishart ploring what has become known as Royal Deeside. it is close to Balmozal Castle (open to the public May to July) and many other castles, distilleries and quiet villages such as Braemar, where Robert Louis Stevenson wrote Treasure Island. Local entertainment includes Highland Games such as the an- nual Braemar Gathering (always attended by the royals) and karaoke nights at Ballater Golf Ciub, where the repertoire ranges from rock n’ roll to Roamin’ in the Gloamin’. Craigendarroch is typical of a new breed of Scottish hotel that offers a historical house, fine din- ing and modern facilities. Another - is Cameron House, a stately home on the banks of Loch Lomond. A building has stood on this site since the 14th century, and the main part is a fine example of Scottish baronial splendor with turrets and coats of arms engraved in stone. ' It anchors an estate of 100 acres including one mile of Loch Lo- mond, Nearby is the hote!’s own marina and clubhouse where guests can rent a boat for sailing, cruising or fishing, or go water- skiing and windsurfing. The spacious public rooms in- clude a handsome library, and the main restaurant, the Georgian, is the place to celebrate a special oc- casion. Here you'll get the best Scottish beef and fresh salmon with some imaginative touches. Rooms at Camcron House are elegant, particularly the five suites in the original building; look no further for the best part of Bri- tain. Like Craigendarroch, the new wings of the hotel have been sym- pathetically added. One contains the leisure centre, which has two large swimming pools, a water slide, two squash courts, a gym, snooker room with three tables and a health and beauty suite of- fering massage to aromatherapy. Nearby is a selection of golf courses, the hotel has fine gardens and there is plenty of scope for exploration -—- everything from golf at Helensburgh with fine views over the River Clyde to climbing Ben Lomond, or walking the ancient walls of Stirling Cas- tle, one of Scotland’s mightiest fortresses. Rates at both luxurious hotels start at about $200 double, in- cluding full breakfast, about the same as you’d pay for a tourist hotel in London.
