For the project, a book with blank pages will travel from region to region in each province and territory in Canada. Learners will express their ideas about what’s happening around them, their feelings about literacy and their new skills of reading and writing. Selections in each regional book will be published in a similar Canadian book. Options for volunteers DISCOVER YOUR community, make new friends and learn new skills. Be a volunteer. The following list is a sampling of the many volunteer opportunities on file at the North Shore Information and Volunteer Centre. LIKE movies? Share your love of movies with a group of seniors who enjoy films and popcorn. A friendly, reliable, outgoing person is wanted to help run the show and pass out the popcorn on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday evenings. VISITORS who enjoy seniors are needed to play bingo, visit, chat and have tea with seniors in care fa- cilities on Tuesdays from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Orienta- tion provided. DISCUSSION group leader who is friendly and outgoing is wanted to lead a ‘‘Golden Expression" discussion group with interested seniors. This is a great opportunity to meet dynamic older people and a chance to give of yourself to others. Volunteer should be over 25. Hours are one hour per week from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. or 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., flexible day. SOCIAL work background is desirable in this posi- tion of information visitcr. A meal delivery service needs 4 person to visit new chents, explain the ser- vices, record health information and fill out forms. Hours are flexible as needed several times per month. The visits, in the Lower Lonsdale area, are approxi- mately 30 minutes long. VOLUNTEER reader with a clear voice is wanted to read the mail and other printed material to a visu- ally-impaired client in the client’s home. Enjoy a friendly visit and perhaps share an interesting book. Reimbursement for mileage and meals at the CNIB. Hours are two to three per week. DRIVER with a reliable four-door car is needed to transport seniors from their homes to an activity cen- tre. Volunteer may stay for lunch and drive them home again. Hours are Monday 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. or Fridays 1 to 3 p.m. Orientation provided. PATIENT sensitive tutors are needed to work on a one-to-one basis with elementary school students who have learning difficulties in the areas of writing, lan- guage, reading, speech/articulation, science and social studies. If you work well with children come end fill this vital need. Hours are flexible between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. weekdays.
