TRAVEL Jim says airport’s problems in Reno have been fixed I HAD a surprise phone call from the manager of the new Jim’s Air terminal in Reno, Nevada. It seems that my column was the only criticism that their office had received concerning the shortcom- ings of the recently-opened facility. There's no stopping North Shore News readers — one went to the trouble of FAXing a copy to Jim Grady’s office, and I presume it didn’t improve his appetite for lunch. Incidentally, Jim Grady is not the “‘Jim’’ in the terminal name. travel wise Barbara McCreadie . | am assured that the $6 million facility is a vast improvement in comfort and convenience for charter passengers over the existing Reno airport. At the time of our conversation I was assured that the only facili- ties currently delayed are the din- ing room and the slot machines. Meanwhile, deli sandwiches are available at the bar. The smoke problem was found to be a direct result of a double- efficient air conditioning system. Not being a mechanical genius, some of the details eluded me, but it seems that it helps if someone turns it on before the passengers arrive. Anyway, whatever the problem, it’s fixed. Many airlines are using the ter- minal, including Air Canada, Ca- nadian Airlines International, Time Air, Horizon, Alaska and a number that I’m less familiar with. In the last two weeks of Oc- tober, approximately 15,000 pas- sengers were processed with nary a complaint. But, more to the point, Jim Grady gave me two phone numbers that we can call should we be dissatisfied with any aspect of the service: (702) 826-7704 will reach his office, and probably Jim himself — if you happen to men- tion anything about that nasty McCreadie woman. The other is a FAX — (702) 333-7327. 1 leave it to your discre- tion as to what you transmit. Grady mentioned that Cana- dians and Australians stand out as being ‘‘vocal in commendation’’ or at least amiable when faced with the unusual. eae Here’s another source of infor- mation regarding freighter travel. There is a twice-monthly bulletin published by Freighter World Cruises, Inc.- 180 South Lake Ave., Suite 335, Pasadena CA 91101. It’s called the Freighter Space Advisory and lists depar- tures and destinations. I haven’t written as yet so have no idea if there’s a charge involved in receiv- ing the bulletin. Just in case you’ve lost the orig- inal address for freighter news, it’s: Freighter Travel Club of America, P.O. Box 12693, Salem, * Delivered to selected areas only OR, 97309. This sort of sea travel should have a real appeai to those with time to spare — kids with a semester on hold or anyone not obliged to punch a time clock. Don’t expect Vegas-style revues, but sleeping in the bilge in ham- mocks isn’t an option either. tank Travel can be limited for those with special needs. Airlines have come a long way from the days of a box lunch — the passengers on most airlines can pre-order (usually 24 hours notice required) a special meal — vegetarian, diabetic, kosher for example — and be sure of dining correctly in the sky. Air France has also published a brochure entitled ‘‘France for the Jewish Traveller’’ listing kosher restaurants as well as synagogues and museums throughout the country.
