Gavin Soanes. Cockroft burned his hands when he tried to pat out a small fire in his North Vancouver apartment, Fire fought the wrong way A 21-YEAR-old North Vancouver City man suffered second-degree burns to his hands after fire broke out carly Sept. 15 in his 200-block East !5th Street apartment. Peter Cockroft, who had been having trouble sleeping, was doz- ing on the living room couch when his 18-year-old brother Michael, sleeping in the living room on a foam bed, awoke with hot feet. The power cord on a radio had been crimped between the bed and a wall and had ignited at approx- imately 7 a.m. Michael shook Peter awake, and Peter reacted instinctively in his at- tempt to put the fire out. “T tried to put it out with my hands. That was the dumb thing. The fire really wasn’t that big by then. I just patted it a couple of times,’’ Cockroft said. ‘'I yelled to Teresa (his wife) and told her to get out of here with Amanda (his 15-month-old daughter).”’ He then ran into the hallway and, using his hands, which were already injured after coming into contact with melting foam from the burning bed, smashed the glass plate on the box holding the fire extinguisher located outside the suite. He ran back into the room and doused the fire with the extin- guisher. Said Cockcroft, ‘I didn’t phone the fire department until Mike was here with the manager.”’ But said North Vancouver District Fire Department Insp. Gavin Soanes, ‘tHe should have called the fire department im- mediately upon discovery of the fire. Upon discovery, get everybody out of the apartment. Be specific and yell ‘Fire.’ Activate the fire alarm system. If it’s a small fire, come back in and at- tempt to extinguish it, but not if it is between you and a safe exit. If you are going to get out and stay out, close the doors." He also stressed preparing and practising a fire escape plan and installing smoke alarms for early fire detection. This year’s fire prevention week, Oct. 9 10 15, wraps up with a fire safety fair Oct. 16 at the Plaza of Nations site in Vancouver. = WEDOINGS + COMMERCIAL + VIDEO PHOD LOOKING FOR A YOUR MEETINGS?
