Dear Editor: An article by Maureen Curtis in your Aug. 17 edition, entitled Public wants Privatization, raises some interesting issues in the cur- ret campaign by castern-vased jn- surance companies to gain contro! of all B.C. auto insurance, The so-called B.C. Automobile Insurance Task Force, which, despite its official-sounding name, is not mandated by the provincial government, has spared no expense in promoting its plans. This group has spent close to a million dollars on broadcast and print advertising. It would appear that they have been successful at turning a few heads, given the comment by United Communications that “dissatisfaction with ICBC is predicated on a belief that ‘the private sector can do most of the things the government now does more cheaply and more efficient- ly." The facts do not support this belief when you consider that: ® Private companies, on average, siphon-off nearly 30 cents out of every premium dollar to pay their operating costs. ICBC needs only 15 cents. * ICBC uses investment income to pay most of those operating ex- penses (99 per cent of your premium goes to pay claims). The private companies use part of their investment income for other pur- poses. © ICBC operates on a break even, non-profit basis. The private companies need a profit. © The private companies will ask B.C. motorists to pay for their costs of acquiring the parts of ICBC they want. You will be asked to pay for something you already own. ¢ The private contpanies have to pay federal taxes, ICBC, as a non-profit Crown corporation, does not. © We would have to pay for their so-called independent review board. ICBC rates are reviewed by the provincial cabinet. It is natural for people to want a better deal. We, however, do not see the private insurers being able to offer a better deal for B.C. motorists given the above points, What's even more revealing is the absence of any firm promises from the ‘‘Task Force,’’ especially in their advertising. LAURSEN | CUSTOM DRAPERIES Keep Lions Gate North Enhancement Project buses fee INV Dear Editor: As a daily commuter between Vancouver and the North Shore, | am concerned about B.C. Transit’s decision to re-locate the North Vancouver bus garage to Burnaby. As most North Shore commuters are aware, on Monday, Aug. 22, a fatal accident at Cassiar and Hastings had traffic tied up for miles. On Tuesday morning, Aug. 23, a broken water main at Cassiar and Pandora again caused rush hour havoc. If it weren’t for special shuttle buses sent out from the North Vancouver garage, hun- dreds of people would have been very late for work. Housing our North Vancouver service buses in Burnaby is ludicrous. A petition is being cir- culated by the Save Our Buses committee on the North Shore. Every concerned North Shore resi- dent should sign this petition. Let’s keep our North Vancouver buses where they belong, on the North Shore! Gordon T. Partridge Vancouver Thinking of Selling?
