16 ~ Wednesday, March 23, 1988 - North Shore News SPORTS P to host hockey tourney BCTV’S HOCKEY team The Tubes will meet Vancouver Police’s The Heat team in’ the feature game of the RCMP Western Canadian Hockey Tour- nament next week. The celebrity highlight of the four-day tournament — hosted by the RCMP’s North Vancouver detachment — the game is a tematch of an earlier meeting be- tween the two teams that saw The Heat burn The Tubes in a 4-3 con- test. In that earlier game, the teams raised $5,000 for Rick Hansen's Man in Motion World Tour for spinal cord research. Proceeds from this game — and other games in the tournament — go to the North Vancouver Minor Hockey Association. To beat The Heat, The Tubes. are rumored to be trying to acquire last-minute ringers Tiger Williams and Chris Oddliesson, but details are sketchy. Among the notables expected to take to the ice in The Tubes’ bid for victory and the coveted title is BCTV sportscaster John McKeachie. Players on The Heat’s roster are all regular Vancouver City police officers. . With the proceeds from the tournament, the minor hockey association will fund its 26 teams and 400 players, aged six to 19 years old, who play hockey. Relying on two fund-raising events annually, the group benefits from these added funds as they help it to increase its services.to young hockey players, noted. The third goal of the first period was awarded during a stoppage in play over a minute after the puck had supposedly gone in. During ‘the stoppage, the goal judge in the spectator seats four rows behind the goal indicated to the referee that the puck had gone in the net, and the referee com- plied with the belated persuasion of the goal judge. The second call was the overtime goal awarded to the Whalers when the rushing player’s shot hit the goal post and was trapped there by goaltender Brian Langlot. : During the ensuing goal-mouth pile-up, created by the Whaler player sliding into Langlot, the net was knocked off its moorings. But rather than the play being whistled dead, a goal was awarded to White Rock although the puck had not entered the net. On. March 19 at the Winter — Club, the Flames were assessed two penalties during the first minute of play and White Rock responded with one goal at the 1:49 mark to take a 1-0 lead. After White Rock jumped in front 6-5 just over three minutes into the middle frame, Port replied with the equalizer only five se- conds later and then gave the Flames the lead for the first time with his hat trick goal of the frame. But the Whalers bounced back with two quick.goals - the first at 9:29 and another at 9:41 to go ahead 8-7, and then added the in- surance goal," ASSES < Iv = Be RS we SCI Bul we need you on our team too!
