The academy, which runs from June 21 to July 10, is divided into three, week-long residential courses designed to upgrade the knowledge of senior and youth evaches and referees with minimal qualifications, and the playing abilities of boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 16. In addition to the basic courses offered this year, the BCSA has been chosen to host a high per- formance symposium for B.C.'s elite coaches and a FIFA referees’ course for the province's tap game officials and some out-of-province referees. Twenty-six coaches have regis- tered for the course, which will emphasize theoretical and practical coaching techniques at an advane- ed level through instructors such as Alan Wade, director of coaching for the Irish Football Association, former England national team goalkeeper Gordon Banks, and West Vancouver resident and former Canadian World Cup team Serving the disabled first overall ORGANIZERS ARE heralding the first North Shore Biathlon as a success and are hoping to hold the popular event again next year, drawing even more partici- pants. Sponsored by the North Shore News, the first event of its kind on the North Shore saw fan Hylands come in first place overall with a top time of 50:57. Second place in the men’s cat- egory went to Dave Harris, who crossed the finish line after 54:53. Third place went to Mark Shorter with his time of 56:25. Fourth place overall and the first place in the woman's cate- coach Tony Waiters. The July 1 to S FIFA referees’ course was last held in Canada in 1978 in Victoria. Open to invited participants on- ly, the course is designed to raise soccer referee standards for those aspiring to become international match officials.
