Divers plunge into new newtsuits

The $200,000 suit weighs 400

fibreglass- like material five times
the strength of steel of equal
weight. With no cumbersome links
to the surface, the newtsuit incor-
porates a self-contained, 48-hour
life support system and includes a
fibre optic linked microprocessor,
which feeds information from the
diver's environment to a digital
display inside the suit’s acrylic
helmet visor.

for this latest bit of diving hard-
ware from the military, the scien-
tific community, and commercial
deep sea operators.

Nuytten says the suit eliminates
the procedure associated with
saturation diving, where a diver
takes 24 hours to compress gradu-
ally to a thousand feet, and eight-
to-nine-days controlled decom-
pression to resurface.

’ “With the average cost of runn-
ing a North Sea oil rig at $300,000
a day and 150 tons of support
equipment necessary for saturation
diving, the advantages of the
newisuit are obvious,’’ he said.

International Hardsuits Inc. is
also researching the development
of a hard space suit for NASA.
