‘Really, it is impossible for
anybody who uses the mountain
not to be involved in at least 75 per
cent of our services,’’ he said.
“The simple fact is that they (the
protestors) want somebody else to
pay for their skiing.’’

Booth said that while his com-
pany was given $80,000 annually
by the provincial government to
offset snow removal costs on the
mountain road and parking lots,
that allowance covered only one
fifth of those costs.

Replacement value of company
snow clearing equipment alone, he
said, was $1 million.

These costs, along with such un-
forseeable factors as a 1,600 per
cent increase in liability insurance
premiums, had to be covered, he
said.

Booth characterized opposition
to his company’s user-pay policies
as a core of three or four people

whose desire for free skiing had
been disguised under ‘‘the mantle
of ‘save the wiiderness’...in an
ongoing effort to create an issue
where none exists.”

The SCBC, he said, had not
even bothered to read his com-
pany’s agreement with the pro-
vince until March 7.

COMPANY'S RIGHTS

That agreement, he said, clearly
shows his company’s rights to
charge fees in all controlled permit
areas and five metres outside of
the permit boundaries, in areas
such as the Triangle Trail, the
Unknown Lake Traii, Pacific Run
Trail and the Power Line Trail.

But SCBC president Lynn Von
Krosigk said Monday alleged ig-
norance of CBRL’s contract is
“absolute hogwash. We have had
a copy of the contract from the
word go. And it clearly states in
two clauses that the permit holder
provide free and reasonable access.

“The idea that he can cut off
access to a class A park is totally

wrong. Mr. Booth is holding the

mountain hostage,’’ she said.

Booth reiterated that the SCBC
constituted a group of freeloaders,
not nature lovers.

He said he had offered 50 per
cent discount rates on the regular
$75 season passes to those crass-
country ski and hiking clubs who
use only a percentage of CBRL fa-
cilities. The offer, he said, had not
been accepted.

He denied SCBC allegations that
his company was planning to in-
stitute charges for summer hiking.

Booth, who said his company,
with 230 employees, was one of the
largest employers in West Van-
couver, pointed out that 95 per
cent of Cypress Provincial Park
was excluded from his company’s
permit area.

ented to Kootenay IBEW
workers by Shaw Dec. 21, Kress
said.

But negotiations collapsed
when 86 per cent of the workers
turned the offer down, she said.

Manager of Shaw Cable’s Pen-
ticton branch Dick Knorr said
Thursday the company had no
intention of breaking the union,
and pointed to job guarantee
clauses offered the Kootenay
workers, which were subsequent-
ly rejected by the union.
