International, provincial, ter- ritorial and state pavilions will feature the best performing artists characteristic of their homeland. From calypso music to miners’ choirs, lantern parades to tribal dance, diversity is the key to it all. Whether visitors are looking for exotic international shows, classical performances of music and dance or the latest hits cff the charts, they’re sure to find it all at Expo.”’ VARIETY From morning till night, an in- credible variety of performances will animate the Exposition in theatres, bandshells, pavilions, plazas and impromptu areas across the 70-hectare site. The Royal. Bank/EXPO 86 World Festival will present performances in venues both on site and in Van- couver’s premier theatres off site. On-site venues include the 1500-seat Xerox International Theatre and the state-of-the-art 4200-seat Expo Theatre, both covered, outdoor theatres. The Kodak Pacific Bowl, an open-air performance area surrounded by a demonstration track provides . covered seats for 3100, with addi- tional hillside seating on the grass. CANADIAN CULTURE For a taste of that unique blend that makes up Canadian culture, Folklife, a cedar-clad enclave at the east end of the site, offers more than 25 free shows a day in ‘the Barn, the Big House and on the Common. Demonstrations of arts, crafts and cuisine will go on in the Forge, the Weavery and Foodlife. The glass-covered Plaza of Na- tions adjacent to the B.C. Pavilion is home of National and Special Day ceremonies, the Amateur and Heritage Programs, regional weeks showcasing B.C.’s top entertainers and a variety of other programs, Composers compete THE VANCOUVER Youth Sym-- phony Orchestra will be sponsor- ing a composer's competition, with the winner receiving a commission of $2,000 to write a work for or- chestra or choir and orchestra of jt 7 ' judges a further feel for his/her approximately 10 minutes in length. This will be performed by the VYSO at the Pacific Wave Festi- val’s Vancouver International Youth Music Festival, Orpheum Theatre, in the fall of 1986. Contestants must reside in the Lower Mainland. Each contestant must submit a score of an orchestral work. If the contestant plans to write for choir if chosen as winner, he/she must ‘also submit an example of his/her ‘choral writing. The contestant may ‘choose to submit another work of any instrumentation in addition to the required works, to give the compositional ability. If at all possible, tapes should be submitted with the scores. The submissions must be ac- companied by an entry form. No entries will be accepted after March 31. The winner will be announced on May I.
