The program, the first of its kind in Canada, is intend- ed for human services profes- sionals —.counsellors, social _ workers, police, educators, human resource managers, journalists, public ad- ministrators, health practi- tioners — who work with clients and staff from a varie- ty of cultural and linguistic nic relati backgrounds. Ethnic Relations is the study of ethnically defined conflicts and problems of migration. Such conflicts arise from the ascription of demeaning characteristics to groups of people and, more important, result from exclu- sion. This new inter- disciplinary program at SFU, through its five core courses, and optional courses, pro- vides an opportunity to ex- plore the causes of unequal ons at SF treatment, to compare ethnic antagonisms internationally, and to develop strategies to improve intergroup relations in Canada in light of this knowledge. The main focus will be on Tuesday, July 17, beginning at 7 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres and snacks prepared in the cooking workshops, a slide presentation by Andree and Maurice Boudard, and winetasting and talk spon- sored by Andres Wines. The program is open to all West Vancouver adults. The cooking workshops, conducted by Wendy Young, a Hotel and Food Manage- ment graduate, will specialize in pate, appetizers and French pastries. The first ses- sion, Monday, July 16, at 9:30 a.m. is the kick-off for the French week activities. A second cooking workshop is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon. . Wednesday, July 18, will feature a visit to the French Cultural Centre, in- cluding a French continental breakfast, and a guided tour of the exhibition of paintings and prints by Cheryl Lobe.
