“TOO SHORT”

Tennis club hits lease

CAPILANO TENNIS Club members are wor-
ried North Vancouver District’s one-year property
lease with the group will kill its membership drive,

council heard Monday.

Caroline McMahon, club
president, told council that if
District doesn’t give the
group another five-year lease
on the property ‘‘new
membership will probably be
reluctant to join the club.’’

District served the club an
**ace’’ last November when it
offered the tennis facility
group a short-term lease in-
stead of the previous five-
year tenancy agreement.

McMahon also pointed out
that the new agreement con-
tains a 30-day termination
clause to vacate the property.

““As a result,’ she said,
“tthe membership will un-
doubtedly decline to the
detriment of the club.”’

According to McMahon,
the recreation facility has
been in District for 53 years
and is a “‘non-profit’’ com-
munity group.

**All we are asking is the

existence of our club and a
guarantee of permanence to
provide this essential ... ser-
vice to the residents of the
North Shore,’’ McMahon
argued.

Council promised the ten-
mis club they would discuss
the implications of the lease
at the next policy and plann-
ing meeting.
