north shore news By NANCY WEATHERLEY HOW DOES A 13 year old boy deal with the fact he is a musical genius? The North Shore has more than its share of such prodigies, and these gifted children must somehow cope with school, friends, and the day to day problems of growing up as well as the fact that they have genius. Nicholas Maloff Jr. is one such child. At 13 he has just received an extraordinarily high 92 per cent in the Canadian Music Com- petition held in Ontario. He placed first in his section of the competition, and was glowingly praised by his judges. That is just the - latest triumph in a list of honors that is quite astounding. Nicholas (he hates nicknames) is small and intense, soft-spoken and spectacled. And he is at his most - animated when talking about NICHOLAS Maloff Jr. of North Vancouver, sits at the piano where he spends much of his time. He studies year round and ~ generally practices about three and a half hours a day, although he slows down a bit in the summer. He has little leisure time. What is his motivation? “Tm never satisfied” he says of his music, “I always want to get it better...If you're always satisfied you’ never get any better.” His greatest moments happen when he's playing and everything comes together. Unaware of judges, audience, or anything except the music, he says he hears and sees himself playing as though he were offstage watching, or listening to a recording. Because of his limited leisure time, he doesn’t like to waste time reading fun books but concentrates on ‘factual books.’ Nicholas will spend the rest of the summer studying . music at U.B.C. and the fall will find him in his first year of highschool at Hand- sworth.
