B2 - Sunday, July 11, 1982 - North Shore News On the road again Here we are, back on the road again. By the time you read _ this, we will be either in Jacksonville or Fort Lauderdale. Normally, I would know exactly where we would be hour by hour, but because this happens to be the day of the World Cup final and we had been scheduled to be by Terry Yorath ee flying to Fort Lauderdale during the telecast things were in the air, so to speak. We were making some last minute changes to allow us to watch that final match. And that final match does leave room for comments. For the first time in many a year, you would have to say that the best team in the world is not in the final. It would be a brave soul who would say that Italy and West Germany are the two best teams. Brazil takes the honour hands down... However, over the. course of the tournament, Italy and West Germany are the two who are left, which is no small feat considering the equal quality of most of the teams in the competition. Going back a few games, it was disappointing to see England go out the way they did. I was particularly put out that Glen Hoddle was again rejected for a regular place in the English mid- field. Hoddle is one of the more stylish and clegant players in the English game and his exceptionally high skill level could have been well used. The English system can become predictable and when that happens, it can be easily stopped, as we all saw. They yged someone dif- ferent, someone who can do the unexpected. Look at a number of their league teams. Ipswich, with the addition of the Dutch, Tottenham with the classy Ardilles and Villa, and now talking about Gerisse, the French midfielder. Players who can add ani extra dimension to the British game. However, we all have our -own sets of problems. With the Whitecaps, I don't think ours are all that serious, We. certainly did come up flat against San Jose, but it’s not the end of the world. At the very beginning of that game, the crowd seemed strangely quict, and I remember saying to Ray Hankin, “There’s something wrong here.” From that point, we started far too slowly and were never able to pick up the pace and paid the price. Meanwhile, here we are on our last long road trip. The travelling is harder than the games, especially, if like me, you don't enjoy flying. For this particular trip we had to gather at the airport Friday morning at 6:45, with our arrival in Jacksonville at 6:45 | that night. After our arrival we got together and kicked the ball around near the hotel for a while, just to get the kinks out, then early to bed. On game days we usually sleep in, then have lunch and laze about till the team meeting at 5:30 or so when we have tea and toast and a short talk from John. After that, it’s off to the game. Following the match, the players usually get together back at the hotel -for a drink to unwind before _bed. Usually, apart from the game itself, we're never away from the hotel. Not very exciting, really, but that’s our life on the road. The glamour and _ ex- citement of a professional athlete is highly overrated, believe me. See you in a couple of weeks. Two years ago, Jeff Mulock concluded that the traditional soccer clinic where he had been in- Structing offered very little for the participant. whose soccer interest sided with goalkeeping. Since his first goalkeeping clinic, two years ago, he has instructed over 150 boys and girls from the North Shore, Fraser Valley and the Okanagan. This past season, seven North Shore teams played in the Sun Tournament of Champions. Jeff was pleased because he had the op portunity to watch six of his students compete in the prestigious tournament. All the goalkeepers played well, and Catherine Fiala of the West Vancouver Cheetahs was selected to the tour- nament All-Star team. This season the school will be located at Seylynn Park with morning and afternoon = sessions throughout the month of July.
