John Geeling (with sign) and 15 other teachers were honored as 20-Year Coaches in Nocth Shore high schools, joining 20 of their-colleagues who have also been recognized for two decades of coaching involvement. iorth Shore school coaches given honors THE NORTH Shore Secondary Schools’ Athletic Association highlighted its 30th anniversary year at Carson Graham last month when presentations were made to 16 teachers who have reached 20 years of coaching during the past five years. The recipients were: Mark Arnott — a football coach at West Vancouver. Secondary while teaching at Pauline Johnson in the 1960s, Arnott has been vice-principal at both. Sentinel and West Vancouver, sponsoring golf, basketball and rugby teams. He is now principal at Bowen Island. John Bennett — sandwiching one year at North Vancouver Secondary between 1! years at Baimoral and now {f at Handsworth, Bennett has been involved with both boys’ and girls’ basketball at just about every second- ary grade level. Larry Brown -- senior boys’ basket- bal! coach at Carson Graham in the 1970s, Brown switched to girls’ hoop 40 years ago and has coached all grades while at Carson Graham, Argyle and Balmoral. He is now principal at Seycove. Doreen Bulowski — she has coached field hockey at Sentinel for the past 15 years, following five years at West Vancouver, one at Delbrook and a couple at Sentinel when she was in- volved in other sports, John Geeling — Retiring this year after 26 years at Handsworth, Geeling has coached and sponsored girls’ field hockey at all age divisions and in his early years also coached basketball. Jim Harrison — senior girls’ basket- ball coach at Windsor for all but one season in the past 15 years, Harrison coached boys’ basketball, rugby and football at Hamilton and then Windsor in the 1960s and 1970s, Nora Harrison — at Argyle since 1965, except for a couple of brief leaves, Harrison coached field hockey for many years and is still coaching track and field, where the hurdles are her specialty. Earl Henderson — after 23 vears coaching Carson Graham’s seaior football team, plus wrestling for half a dozen seasons, Henderson is taking a year off to travel the world. 7.K. Kariya — although he has coached basketball, volleyball, track and golf for several seasons at Wind- sor, Hamilton and now Argyle, it is rugby that Kariya is known for coaching for so many years. Ken Mayson -— one of very few ever to be chairman in two sports — girls’ basketball and golf — Mayson was at Hamilton for seven years, Handsworth one and Carson Graham 13 where he had teams in those sports. He becomes mathematics specialist for the North Vancouver School District in September. Joe Miller — at Handsworth in the 1960s and at Windsor since 1971, Miller has made his mark coaching football and more recently managing Windsor boys’ soccer and now girls’ basketball teams. Mike Morgan — a permanent fixture at Sutherland since 1964, Morgan has coached boys’ or girls’ basketball at one level or another virtually every year, and also had tennis teams in the early 1980s. Ed Reimer — at Argyle since 1962, Reimer has coached both boys’ and girls’ basketball at almost all high school age divisions and also had cross country running teams for a few seasons. Len Slade — a football and basket- ball coach, Slade has coached at North Vancouver, Windsor, Howe Sound, Delbrook, Windsor again, Handsworth and Sutherland where he is presently vice-principal. Moe Williams — commissioner of worth, Ed Pedersen B.C. high school curling, Williams has been working with rinks for years, but has also coached other sports — notably basketball and track and field -— while at Handsworth, Sutherland, Hamilton and since 1980 at Argyle. Les Wilson — NSSSAA President in 1971-72, Wilson has coached a great variety of sports at different levels, but if one sticks out it is soccer where he’s been that sport’s chairman for the past 12 seasons. He moved from Hamilton to Argyle in 1969 where he’s been ever since, The association's 20-year Coach awards are made every five years. The first honored in 1978 were Scott Chambers, Bob Clarke, Ernie Kershaw, Roger Kronquist, Peggie Martin, Peter Montador, Bill Parnell who retires this year, Hee Rossetti, Mike Smith, Brian Upson, Pat Webb and Dick Wright.
