With an attendance of more than 12,000 people last year, the season is to be ex- panded by four weeks this year for a total of twelve weeks and a larger tent — capable of accommodating 450 people — will be used. Christopher Gaze, an actor who made a huge hit as a rude, mischievous Puck last year, is to play the leading role in Shakespeare’s Richard HI, which will be directed by Scott Swan, former Artistic Director of Edmonton’s Nor- thern Lights Theatre and the Lennoxville Festival. **Richard, as | see it, is an actor, and he plays a good deal of the play to the au- dience,’’ says Gaze, who in- sists he will enjoy playing the ‘*mean hunchback’’. Every actor in the play — apart from Richard - will be playing several roles as the play has a huge cast. The ac- tors themselves will create the scenes, moving props, scenery etc. Most of the actors taking part are working for con- siderably less than they would usually earn because they are dedicated to the idea of the Shakespeare Festival. Famous actress Glenda Jackson has agreed to be the Festival’s patron this year. Eric Epstein, Artistic Director the Vancouver Shakespeare Festival, will direct the third play in this summer’s season, The Winter’s Tale, a play which has not been performed pro- fessionally in Vancouver for more than 50 years. ‘This play was so far ahead of its time,’’ says Eps- tein. ‘‘It is a tragi-comedy, with a tragic beginning and a happy ending combining to make an epic spectacle in the finale. ‘“‘The action goes from country to country, style to style, and we shall set it in medieval times. The sheer magical fairytale quality is what people get caught up with,’ says Epstein. The story concerns a little girl, abandoned, then brought up by a poor shepherd, who then turns out to be a princess. The role of the villainous Autolycus will be played by Henry Woolf. So there it is, yet another fine season of Shakespearean plays for Vancouverites to enjoy this summer. The Comedy of Errors opens June 13, Rickard IH on July 12, and The Winter’s Tale opens August 8. The plays will run in repertory until September 2.
