Ben Aftleck, Gwyneth Paltrow and Calista Flockhart donned Shakespearean roles last year, Paltrow picking up an Oscar for her star turn in Shakespeare in Love. Alicia Silverstone is set to star in Kenneth Brannagh’s production of Love’s Labuur’s Last, to be released in Europe this spring. Hamlet is set for yet another remake, this version to star Ethan Hawke in the title role, supported by Kyle MacLachlan, Sam Shepard, Biil Murray, Casey Affleck and an as- yer-unknown Julia Stiles as the wagic Ophelia. Anthony Hopkins has just hit the cinemas in che ude role of Titus, based on Shakespeare’s little performed bloodbath Titus Andronicus. Four hundred years after he penned his first play, Shakespeare is a hit on the big screen. What's the attraction? Vancouver actor and director John Juliani says it has to do with Shakespeare's gift at telling a great story. “He was a little ahead of his time,” says the Horseshoe Bay resident. “He may have anticipated the whole cinematic style because he writes in a way that structurally lends itself ta film. His works are varied and complete. There’s Jaughing and crying... once you get ast the language, you find that he's time- ess.” Juliant, his wife Donna Wong: Juhani and their production company Savage God have mounted The Shakespeare Project. The epic venture is a series of staged dramatic readings of the complete works of Shakespeare. The venue ts Christ Church Cathedral, with the first event, a reading of Romeo and Juliet, wk- ing place this weekend. Audiences shouldn't expect an elaborate production of the classic love story. Savage God doesn’t have a blockbuster budget. This is Shakespeare unplugged. No sets. No cos- tumes. Just the spoken word and the actors’ ability to bring Shakespeare's writing off the page and into the audience's imagination, says Juliani, who hopes to involve abour 100 actors in the project. Son Alessandra Juliani is Romeo vo Javne Paterson’s Juliet, with popular West Van actor Gillian Barber as Lady Capulet in this week- end’s production. Applause Theatre Books of New York has donated the first folio Shakespearean text edi- tiens thar acters will use for the performances. The texts are annotated by UBC professor and North Shore resident Neil Freeman and are the closest reference to Shakespeare's orig- inal scripts. Forty events — one for each of Shakespeare's 37 plays and three for his son- nets — are planned over a two-year span. A passport for a reserved seat at all 40 events is $300. Tickets (festival seating) are $10 ac the door. For more information, call the Shakespeare Project hotline at 921-7144.
