/ Nursing home fire kills 21 MISSISSAUGA, Onat.(UPI) — A fire that swept throngh a private oursing home killed 21 elderly patients, some still in their beds, and injured firemen who daringly rescued dozens of other invalid residents from the heavy smoke. “I can’t remember that many deaths in any one fire,” Mississauga Police Chief Doug Burrows said late Monday, hours after the flames began to spread through the top floor of the three-storey home. “The victims were found im various areas. Some were in their beds,” Burrows said. “It looks like the fire was isolated , we think, to one area and it spread out from what appears to be one room.” “It appears as if smoke caused most of the deaths,’’ he said, “although we understand at least one was very badly burned.” Burrows said 35 people were treated for smoke inhalation, and seven firemen and_ several policemen were over- come by smoke while battling the blaze that enguifed the nursing home owned by Ex- tendicare, which operates other homes in Ontario, Saskatchewan, British Columbia and the United States. Lalonde denies resources grab VICTORIA (UPC) — Federal Energy Minister Marc Lalonde has denied Ottawa ts trying to pay off its debts by making a grab for Alberta and British Columbia resource revenues through a proposed tax on natural gas exports. “I would question this.” Lalonde said Monday after meeting witn B.C. Energy Minister Bob McClelland. “Any tax ts a money _ collection but our pur- pose (in proposing an export tax on natural gas) ts to try and raise the revenue that the national government needs in the energy field, not for general use.” Lalonde said Mc- Clelland has made clear B.C.’s opposition to any export tax on energy.
