The trio were discussing fundralsing plans to a pay fora much-needed Command Vehicle to replace the volunteer team’s 10-year-old truck. phill drive for rescuers ; : By Andrew McCredie Associate Editor — E. andrewOnsnews, com SHE idea cf the North Shore Rescue Team needing to be res- cued is growing ever more pos- a sible as the volunteer organiza- tion continues to struggle with j fundraising efforts for a new -command vehicle. _ And with winter just around the cor- ner, team leader Tim Jones has launched a new campaign called Operation Rescue. “It’s really getting near the critical point with our present vehicle,” Jones @ said earlier this week. “And with the win- "ter months approaching, we’re on course for another record number of rescues.” Last year the 40-member volunteer : force took part in 60 rescues in North Shore mountains, the Fraser Valley and other parts of the province and Washington state. Jones estimates the team’s 1997 tally at approximately 49 rescues, and with November and December still to come, the team is expecting another 20 or so calls. And that’s what’s got Jones worried. “Our current vehicle is over 10 years old,” Jones says, “and we crawl up Seymour or Cypress roads at about 20 miles per hour.” In addition, the brakes on the truck are a constant concern for team mem- bers, especially on slick and dark roads — conditions that go hand in hand with mountain rescues. The confined space of the current truck also hampers the team’s ability to do its job. “With our increasing role in complex wilderness medical rescues, we need a vehicle that has the expanded capacity to transport and deploy specialized life-sav- ing equipment, allows us to respond to critical situations on time, and maintain communication with our rescue person- nel,” Jones adds. What they need, he says, is a $350,000 command vehicle, which includes $90,000 in communication equipment. To date, the team has raised $20,000, primarily in the form of individuals writ. ing cheques to the fund. “But what we really need is some big dollar corporate help,” Jones says. “Someone that will come in with $50,000 or $100,000 and get this thing going. “We hope that the business communi- ty, citizens and those who value the out- doors will come forward to support us in our own life-saving campaign.” For more information about Operation Rescue, call 983-7441.
