With watercolor, pen and - ink, Sills paints portraits of people and places. Each image is more than a record of a favorite scene or setting — it is a visual expression of a spe- cial memory or treasured abject, says Sills. “It’s not about the furnish- ing..” says the artist, who _dysss on a background in art : ant design to practise her cre silts spent a decade in Toronto writing, editing and - consulting for-an assortment .of lifestyle magazines includ- ing City & Country Home, Cottage Life and Canadian House & Home before moving out West. - As with her art, Sills says her greatest challenge work- ing on those magazines was to rise above a simple design statement, to capture the essence of the people who lived there, all in a simple vignette. “Everybody is fascinating. Everybody has an interesting story to tell,” says Sills, who sees her job as an artist in find- ing those stories and bringing them out with paint and Paper.
