Chloramine iS a serious water threat Dear Editor: Within the District of North ‘Vancouver there were 62 water main breaks in 1993 (data from Water Engineering Department) resulting in chlorine-based water discharges entering our many creeks and rivers via the storm sewer system. If the Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) contin- ues in its promotion of the stronger, more stable chloramine option for water disinfection, our water bod- ies will be unalterably damaged. Two years ago, during a test run of chloramine, a water main broke in Surrey; and when the water flowed into Fergus Creek there was an instant fish-kill. The Federal Department of Fisheries can charge the district up to $100,000 for every. discharge of a foreign substance that damages the fish habitat. With the number of waterline breaks that are constantly occurring in the district, chloramine-based water could result in. numerous lawsuits and a breakdown of North Van's valuable fish-bearing streams and rivers.
