Even though the 300 ZX Turbo has 78 more horsepower than the non-turbo model, its fuel con- sumption is almost identical, ac- cording to Transport Canada fig- ures. However, fuel consumption ina car like this depends a lot on how you drive. Turbo models come standard with Nissan’s Super HICAS four-wheel steering system. This combined electronic/mechanical system uses a speed sensor, steer- ing angle sensor and a computer to send signals to a hydraulic ac- tuator attached to the multi-link rear suspension. The steering angle of the rear wheels is altered slightly according to speed and direction. This results in very quick high-speed lane changes, excellent steering response in tight, twisty turns, and greater stability and driver con- tro Powerful, ventilated four-wheel disc brakes with ABS are standard equipment. The 300 ZX Turbo also offers an adjustable suspension as standard equipment, with two shock absorber settings — Sport and Touring — adjustable from the cockpit. The Sport setting is too harsh for my tastes. I'd tecommend leaving it in the Tour- ing position. Most of my complaints with the 300 ZX have to do with the inte- - rior. While ergonomics are superb (position of gear fever, instru- ments, controls in relation to lame Za ol EXERC 1993 TOYOTA TERCEL driver), headroom is limited for tall drivers even with the elec- trically adjustable seat lowered. The side roof pillar is very close to the driver’s head, particularly the latch mechanism for the T-bar roof. tn addition, there is no airbag, very little storage space, the trunk is shallow and small, and left and right rear three-quarter vision is obstructed by thick B and C pillars, making lane-changing a challenge. However, these are the kind of sacrifices made by many sports cars in the name of performance, and most of the 300 ZX’s com- petitors suffer similar drawbacks. Like Porsche, Nissan offers a special high-performance driving school for 300 ZX owners — a great idea considering the high- performance nature of this car.
