ARGYLE SECONDARY students get ready to mount thelr an-
nual cabaret this Friday, May 14, at the school. The event,
presented by the school’s music and performing arts pro-
grams,is dubbed ‘‘Junglemania”’ and will feature music from
the ‘30s to the ‘90s. Tickets are available at the school or by
phoning 985-3181. Proceeds go to support Argyle’s music
and music scholarship programs.

new film to Cannes

WEST VANCOUVER actor John
MacLaren left for Cannes last Fri-
day hoping to strike it lucky at the
world's most glamorous film festi-
val.

MacLaren plays the starring role
in Stroke, a 17%-minute movie
about one man’s struggle with life
and death that was nominated in
the non-competitive short
feature-film category.

Directed by Mark Sawers and
produced by Driftwood Produc-
tions, Stroke was nominated for
Best Dramatic Short Film at. this
year’s Genie Awards and is one of

three short Canadian feature films
and the only one from the West to
win the Cannes nomination.

“I'm very. happy. Ecstatic,”
said MacLaren, who Yas starred in
such TV series as Bordertown,
Danger Bay and Neon Rider, and
in the made-for-TV movie, The
Exxon Valdez Story. ‘‘I'm
especially happy for the director
because he put a ot of effort into
this.”

Stroke receives its world
premiere screening May 18 at the
Cannes festival, which opens
tomorrow.
