The fall-of 1992 marked the women’s over-30 soccer on the North Shore. In fact, it is the only women’s over-30 league in Greater Van- couver. The first season proved to be an exciting one. Six teams totalling 120 players, mainly novices, rapidly improved their skills and their enthusiasm for the game. “No one wanted to take any time off. Our team even practised in the snow once and had a great time,” said Bob Balneaves, coach of the Cap Shooters.: Following the last game before Christmas, a luncheon was held to celebrate a highly successful inau- ‘gural season. There was a phenomenal turn- out of 108 people from the league registry of 120 players. Awards, lots of door prizes and gifts for volunteers were given out amidst much laughter as people traded funny anecdotes from the games. In response to everyonie’s desire to play again as soon as possible, five games were added to the schedule after Christmas, culminating with a round-robin tournament on Sunday, March 28, at the Eagle Harbor Community Centre. The tournament, scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., will be followed by a potluck lunch. Refreshments will be available and spectators are most welcome to cheer on the teams. It is obvious by the interest in this new league that it was sorely needed. “The feague has given a Jot of people their first chance-to play, rather than watch soccer,” said Kathrin Wallace, coach of the Silver Streaks. At present, the West Van Waves team would like to add several players to its roster.
