Burrard Band celebrates with multicultural event Moe Guss Memorial Canoe Race THE SUN on Saturday brought the crowds out, and the Tains on Sunday helped keep them away, but on balance the Moe Guss Memorial Canoe Race and Multicultural Event held at Cates Park weekend, was a success. Native people from B.C. and Washington including Ladysmith, Saanich and Lummi — brought their canoes, pitched their tents on the grass of the park, and gathered together to celebrate the memory of a young man who was killed two years ago on the Dollarton Highway. Moe Guss, a member of the Burrard Indian Band, was struck by a vehicle on Sept. 9, 1990. In opening the event, Chief Leonard George thanked Mayor Murray Dykeman, who attended the opening ceremonies, and the rest of North Vancouver District Council for waiving the bylaws and _ allowing the visitors to camp at the park. Master of Ceremonies, Bob George, welcomed the guests, both native and non-native, and in a special message to those born in Canada said, ‘‘For those of you who are non-native, but were born here, forget that you are non-native. You are a native of this great country.’’ In addition to several canoe races each day, the event featured many entertainers, inchiding the Children of Takaya Dance troupe, singer Anton Kolstee, and native/country performer Rick Patterson.
