Next Weiss project an adaptation From page 29 good training for the reviews I've gotten,”’ he says breaking into laughter. Weiss was old enough to know good theatre from bad by the time he was 14. He saw a bad amateur produc- tion at Camp Wakonda in Upper New York State (the same summer camp that got a mention in Ghostbusters), and decided then he'd better start writing his own plays. One of his biggest inspirations was his older brother Eric, a gifted visual artist who died this year of AIDS at the age of 40. Weiss says he was constantly trying to emulate him, but with no talent for drawing, ‘! decided on the next best thing: writing.” His brother's death hit his family hard. “lt was very difficult,’ says Weiss. My mom didn’t even-know he was gay. The doctors tried everything, but his Russian peasant body, which up to that point had held up to everything else, just packed it in.” “1 flew back for the funeral ~ act ally Eric had two funerals — he .: 5a very extravagant person. And | felt i'd spent some time with him.” Av the moment, Weiss is work- ing on a new adaptation of The Pacchi, and he says he wants to do more directing. One of the reasons he got into directing was because there wasn't enough money in playwriting. “Joan MacLeod is probably making a living as a playwright and maybe Tom Cone and Brad Fraser. Every other playwright is working for film and TV, but | hate it and can't do it.” Runs allernate evenings, July 15- Aug. 15 at 8:30 p.m. Tickets: $15/9 from 280-3311 of 687-0174, Metro Theatre: Where's Charley?
