34 - Friday, January 31, 1992 —- North Shore News Fuel top factor In purchases new survey discovers FUEL ECONOMY is a growing concern to motorists for both financial and environmental reasons, according to the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA). In what CAA believes is the largest Canadian survey of its kind, with well over 40,000 tespondents, preliminary figures show that 25.4% of motorists . consider fuel economy to be one of the top three factors they will consider when buying their next car. This compares to 19.6% last year. Whereas fuel consumption was the sixth most important fac- tor in 1991, it is the fourth most important factor. this year. These figures are to be published in the soon-to-be-released Autopinion Annual 92. Other indications that motorists are watching their fuel consump- tion are preliminary figures for driving distance. The average an- nual driving distance reported this year was 18,442 km., down 734 km. from 19,176 km. last year. CAA has called on the federal government to implement pro- gressively improved fuel economy Standards, and to make them mandatory by proclaiming the Motor Vehicle Fuel Consumption Standards Act, which has already been passed by Parliament and received Royal Assent. Over the past few decades cars have become much more fuel-efficienc, but no significant improvements have occurred in recent years. CAA'’s policy position is based on results of annual public policy surveys, in which CAA members have identified improved fuel economy as a preferred means of helping -the environment. Tighter fuel economy standards receive anv 83% approval rate, compared to only an 18% approval rate for a carbon tax. According to CAA President Michael McNeil, ‘‘Motorists are suffering economically from the recession, from GST on car maintenance and from excessive gas taxes. They want to save money and they want to protect the environment. Improved fuel economy is an excellent method to assist in the achievement of both goals.”” WV artist’s | work displayed WEST VANCOUVER’S James Davis Nelson will have a one-day show of his artwork at the Adonis Gallery on Sunday, Feb. 2. : Nelson studied classical realism at the National Academy of Design and he received Ford Foundations grants to study at the Art Students League of New York.
