By Surj Rattan News Reporter A salute to Spain Best Ball 1992 creates a theme evening for diabetes research The Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA) will once again hold its annual Best Ball fundrais- er at the Hotel Vancouver’s Pacific Ballroom on Feb. 1. North Vancouver resident Patty Hearn has again been appointed the chairman; this time for Best Ball 1992: A Salute to Spain. She also chaired the event last year. ‘Best Ball is a fundraising ball for diabetes research. It’s eight years old, and we choose a coun- try each year, and we work with the consulates of those countries,"” said Hearn. ‘‘We create a theme evening. Hearn is expecting to raise at least that amount this year. And while most people have been generous in supporting the event, Hearn admits the current economic times have made some people reluctant to donate as they would in past years. “You can feel people's pockets tightening up. It’s tough to fun- draise,’’ said Hearn. ‘1 think it has been tougher this year. You have to be the kind of person who can accept no as an answer as well as yes. Some people just cannot afford to give.” Hearn has been a volunteer with the CDA for the past five years. She also works part-time as a nurse in Lions Gate Hospital’s nec-natal intensive care unit which allows her to help the mothers of many diabetic infants. She said she first became in- volved with the CDA after she Jearned that diabetes had been diagnosed in the nine-year-old child of her best friend. The disease has also been diagnosed in her father. “*Research is an important area,’’ said Hearn. ‘‘But research is research.
