MAILBOX Canvasser disagrees with Lautens column Dear Editer: I was surprised to read of Trevor Lautens’ wife’s experience when collecting for charity in West Vancouver. I live in Upper Lynn Valley and my experience has been the reverse. Recently, while canvassing for the Heart Foundation, I col- lected $104 from 27 homes and these were not millionaire’s homes, just average income homes, some of whose residents are retired. It’s good to know | live in a charitable neighborhood. Ella Warrington North Vancouver Good riddance to the Edgemont cherry trees Dear Editor: I object to your Feb. 20 front page article regarding the removal of the cherry trees on Edgemont Boulevard. I disagree with Mr. Sedden's remarks of displeasure on the removal of these trees. The first year these trees drop- ped their fruit I couldn't believe the mess the village was in. I took the time to go to most of the merchants and found they were also displeased with the mess. Many merchants spent more of their time sweeping the ‘“‘inky’”’ fruit off their sidewalks than at- tending their stores. The mistake was not having these trees removed that first year when they could have been relocated. We commend him on finally solving this problem. L.L. Williams North Vancouver City should address parking problems Dear Editor: Your March | edition carried a story about Lower Lonsdale park- ing problems. 1 have been to the Famous Players theatres on Esplanade twice recently and used the lot down the lane eastward from the complex. What a disgrace! Dark, unpaved, the ticket dispenser unlit so that you can’t tell what coins are needed. You could break an ankle on your way to and from your car in the pot-holes, or be mugged in the darkness. 1 suggest that mayor and coun- cillors have a look at these lots after dark and spend some money making them attractive and safe. Alan Croll West Vancouver Flowers are disappearing Dear Editor: Ever since the tragic automobile accident last July which took the lives of sisters Lisa and Linda Maier, family and friends have placed flowers at the accident site (Mt. Seymour & Berkley) in their memory. Sadly, the flowers often disappear, which has greatly upset the girls’ grandmother, other fam- ily members and friends. As one who misses the girls too, I wonder if parents would take a moment to explain to children why the flowers are there. Perhaps it will help to keep the flowers where they belong — at a symbolic place in loving memory. Susie DuQuesne Vancouver Need machines, not rebates Open letter to Margaret Jessup, North Vancouver School Board District #44: Please regard this letter as a clear message to install condom machines in the washrooms of ail middle and senior secondary schools in North Vancouver. I cannot believe we are to com- pare the disadvantages of instali- ing cigarette machines, which are a health hazard, to the advantages of installing condom machines, which are a health protector. Please, enough of this waste of taxpayers’ money on debates.
