The NSEDC’s recent submission to the Stroag Communities in the "90’s program was chosen the winner for the Mainland- Southwest region. There were about 40 submis- sions made from municipalities across the province and several came from the Mainland- Southwest region Bonnie Pyplacz, NSEDC's eco- nomic development officer, said the NSEDC’s submission was picked a winner because of the quality of the entry, the depth and difficulty of the projects submit- ted and long-term benefits to the North Shore. **But most importantly, for the outstanding level of support shown to the EDC by the business community with nearly 80 letters of support being submitted, some long after the application had been sent in,’ said Pyplacz. She added that the real work now begins for the NSEDC. Pyplacz said the local business organization will act as coor- dinator of the projects selected for NSEDC economic development officer Bonnie Pyplacz ... organization wins prestigious award, completion and will work with the project management team and sector specialists to ensure the projects are finished to give the North Shore maximum benefit from the program. ‘“*Though the EDC will act as facilitator, we will need a myriad of help from the business com- munity and other local groups to carry out the program,'’ said Pyplacz, who added that each project will require several people to sit on committees. Strong Communities is a pro- gram of the ministry of regional and economic development aimed to help communities work on pro- jects which are too farge to be handled by local staff. CONTRACT AWARDED NORTH VANCOUVER-based Envirochem Services Ltd., has won a $56,349 contract to provide Environment Canada with an in- ventory of sources, uses and methods of disposing of creasote and creosote-impregnated materi- als. The final report, which will cover practices during the last 50 years, wiil be delivered by Jan. 31, 1991, SQUAMISH JOBS WEST VANCOUVER-Howe Surj Rattan | BUSINESS BRIEFS Sound MLA and B.C. Environ- ment Minister John Reynolds, along with Forests Minister Claude Richmond, have announc- ed that Pan-Abode international Ltd., has been awarded a five-year timber sale licence under the Small Business Forest Enterprise pro- gram. ‘This will allow the company to increase its staff by 50 people over the term of the licence,’ said Richmond. He added that the licence allows the harvesting of 165,000 cubic metres of timber in the Squamish forest district. Reynolds said Pan-Abode In- ternational has a home manufac- turing and re-manufacturing facil- ity in Richmond with dry kilns, a planer, a twin-band resaw, trim optimizer system, log knotchers and purlin-processing and gable processing lines. Reynolds added that the com- pany will develop a retail yard and re-manufacturing facility in Squamish in a joint venture with Daken Forest Products and will expand its product line to include finished cedar products, fencing and cedar decking. ENERGY CHALLENGE THE NORTH Shore Power Smart Competition is heating up with the news that North Vancouver City has moved out in front with the adoption of B.C. Hydro’s Municipal Efficiency Poticy. The challenge, designed to promote and adopt the most effi- cient use of electrical energy, has attracted widespread attention on the North Shore. To date, all three North Shore municipalities have accepted the challenge and have been joined by the Park Royal Mall and Lynn Valley Centre. North Shore residents can also take part in the challenge on Power Smart Night in B.C. On Wednesday, B.C. Hydro is asking everyone in B.C. to turn out all unnecessary lights for the evening. Participation by North Shore res- idents will be measured and points awarded. The objective of Power Smart Night is to show how much each person’s contribution to conserva- tion can mean when added to others. B.C. Hydro’s Power Smart program has a goal of saving 2,400 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually by the year 2,000.
