Readers give tips on B&Bs and “¥OLLOWING A recent cclumn where I confessed my secret desire to operate a Bed and Breakfast, I received a two-page letter from a reader who is doing it — right here in North Van. Here are a few excerpts: “have been operating a B&B service for several: years and still Jove what I’m doing. ““Bed and Breakfast is fun! It is also a lot of work with polishing, froning and planning menu every day (and I do swab out the toilets myself), but it is a very rewarding business and our lives ere enriched by the many people we meet from other coun- tries as well as from other parts of Canada. “*If we ever get to visit all the . places we have been invited to we will be travelling for years.” Soe the need for 2 break. Not like some businesses that must keep a regular schedule of hours, a B&B can shut down for weeks if the op- erators want to take a vacation. I was flattered that she took the time to write, especially since she mentioned that a couple of my rec- ipes are regular favorites on her breakfast menu! However, this is suppased to be a travel column, isn’t it? 220 Ancther reader has passed along two restaurant tips from the San Francisco area. He’s a regular business traveller to that city — travelwise I phoned the reader and we chatted about the actual opera- tional details and several important points were made. First she assured me that they never had unpleasant guests. She gives them keys and has never had 2 single object take a walk. Any accidental breakage has been covered by apologies and of- fers to replace. ‘Her formula for success is to - give her guests plenty of personal attention which sounds to me easy to do. But. the most important thing that we should realize is that she’s doing a wonderfui job at -pro- moting the shops and restaurants on the ‘North Shore. She tells guests, “Why fight the traffic overtown? You can have a lovely dinner right on the North Shore.’’ Then she gives them directions to sexeral restaurants in various price . One. thing she is very careful of — parking. All ber guests are pzo- vided with off-street parking ard she’s never had a complaint from - neighbours who might object if the street was cluttered with cars. Neise is never a problem. Her guests tend to get up early and go to bed early — leaving her days virtually free (after she’s finished swabbing out those toilets, that is). Best of all, she has the option to refuse bookings whenever she fcels RAVE REVIEWS Barbara McCreadie Mike, are you listening? (@4ike ‘is ancther regular visitor io that area and -had his life con- siderably brightened by the Caffe Sport!) The first is: Tadich Grill, 240 California St., San Francisco, tel: 391-2373. ; The reader tells me that the res- taurant has been in business for 116 years, is operated by the same Yugloslavian family and specializes in fish, Service is conducted at a re- markabie long bar and it is next to . _ impossible to get.a job there. The staff has been around for most of the 110 years and truly loves the job. Do not visit if you’re on a tight budget — the prices are pricey. His second reccmmendation: Try “Gaylord’s’”? in the Stanford Shopping Centre. It’s East Indian food and, according to my reader, “wonderful’’. He also commended the centre itself as worth a visit — full of unusual speciality shops, including one bookstore (name unavailable) that sells nothing but travel books. I really want to give this a try — most bockshops have just a shelf - of two of the com- mon-denominator type ef books. I'd be like a glutton locked in a delicatessen. I’ve just received a press release on & new hotel recently opened. Check out 895 Sunshine Coast Highway, P.O. Box 739, Gibsons, VON 10, tel: 886-3008. Judging by the pictures the rooms are well designed and it’s also a spa-type of place with mini gym, hot tub, sauna and heated pool. They didn’t send me a rate- sheet. The reason I’m bringing this to your attention is that, most visitors to Gibsons either stay at private cabins or they don’t stay at all. The town isn’t overencumbered with rooms to rent. aoe If you’re still weighing destina- tions for a winter vacation, have you considered Texas? They are simply flooding me with tourism stuff!
