MON.-FRI. 8:00-5:30 CULTURAL FUNDING on the North Shore will continue on an ad-hoc basis following North Van- couver City Council’s decision last Monday to not participate in a regional funding program. Contributing Writer The Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) had asked that 25 cents per capita be used to establish an endowment fund and to establish grants for activities of ‘‘regional significance,’’ explained a report released by city social planning analyst Janet Patterson. According to Patterson’s report, only two candidates had been identified for regional grants: the Vancouver Symphony and _ the Vancouver Opera. Ald. Stella Jo Dean said the city had already supported the Van- couver Symphony this year with a $3,200 contribution towards their performance of the 1812 overture on the waterfront on Thursday. Dean said while the proposed increase wasn’t a great deal of money, she was concerned the city would have no say in where the money would be spent. ‘Certainly I would support something on the North Shore,’’ she said. North Vancouver City residents © currently contribute the second highest amount to cultural fund- ing, after Vancouver City, and ac- cording to a City Cultural Policy Committee report, North Van- couver City residents pay three to four times the per capita contribu- tions of North Vancouver and West Vancouver Districts. Patterson’s report also goes on to caution that while a 25 cent per capita contribution is ‘‘reason- able’’, the budget figures submit- ted by the GVRD also indicate that municipal contributions might have to increase 30 per cent to meet the final 1994 budget.
