Car fires keep | firefighters busy | A NUMBER of car fires kept North Shore firefighters on the road last weekend. West Vancouver District Fire Department firefighters responded April 16 at 2 a.m. to a report of a burning car in the 2300-block of Mathers Avenue. Arson is as the cause of a fire which damaged a con- vertible Volkswagen. West Vancouver Police are investigating the case. On April 15, West Vancouver firefighters responded tc two car fires caused by carburetor backfiring. Damage in both cases was minimal. Meanwhile in North Vancouver City, firefighters were called April 15 just after 2 a.m. to a car parked in the 204-biock of West 4th Street. Fire gutted 2 1987 Hyundai Pony. The fire is believed to have started in the back seat ef the car. Arson is suspected. Woman jailed for theft A 48-YEAR-OLD woman of no fixed address was sentenced to 30 Gays in jail after pleading guilty to a theft charge of over $1,000. Smoking causes | two WV fires BURNING FURNITURE kept West Vancouver District Fire Department firefighters busy April 3. Firefighters were called to Inglewood Manor just before 2 p.m, after a smoldering cigarette had caused an upholstered chair to catch fire. Smoke was noticed by manor staff members and the fire was extinguished by the staff. Two smoke detectors, which failed to activate the alarm system, were later replaced. A few hours Iter, firefighters were calfed out to Hollyburn Hoase. A cigarette in an ashtray, which had been placed on a chair cushion, had burued into the cushion. A smoke alarm activated acd staff at Hollybarn House managed to extinguish the fire. A fire department spokesman credits quick action on the part cf i staff members at both seniors’ facilities for minimizing the fire damage. FEDERAL FUNDS Job re-entry project announced ASSOCIATE MINISTER of Na- tional Defence and Capilano-Howe Sound MP Mary Collins recently announced funding of $332,523 under the Canadian Jobs Stategy to train North Shore women for clerical job duties, administrative assistants and other modern office skills. In making the announcement, Collins said, ‘‘Business and clerical jobs are the number one expanding demand in the labor market. North Vancouver School District 44 has been very successful with similar projects in the past and we expect a high rate of job placement for the participants upon completion of this project.” The Job Re-entry project, car- ried out by North Shore Continu- ing Education, will provide clerical skills such as keyboarding, office procedures and computer orienta- tion in both word processing and accounting software packages. Among 40 participants, 20 of whom have already started their course work, are four native In- dians, two disabled women and six members of visible minorities. A commitment has also been made for 30 per cent of the trainees to be social assistance recipients. The training schedule will in- clude four months in a classroom, and three months of practical on- the-job experience. The Job Re-entry program under the Canadian Jobs Strategy offers funding for projects design- ed to help women re-enter the work force.
