8 - Friday, February 24, 1989 - North Shore News What are a few thousand dollars if humanity spared? Dear Editor: The citizens of the District of North Vancouver voted loud and clear in 1982 to make their com- munity a nuclear weapons free zone. As one of the organizers of the referendum, your editorial Nu- clear Reactio; was a disappoint- ment to me. The support the North Shore News gave providing news coverage and prime placement for our advertising was partly in- strumental in getting an 80 per cent positive view. In New Zealand every municipality voted to become nu- clear weapons free, thereby allow- ing Prime Minister Lange to ac- tively enforce this declaration for the country as a whole. I daresay it was no more a part of municipal responsibilities in New Zealand than it was here, but New Zealanders were able to enact a major international policy state- ment through their local govern- ments. Bridge editorial missed the facts Dear Editor: Your Bridge Too Far editorial tended to be too myopic and you should not forget three important facts: 1. The North Shore’s sustained economic growth stems from the access provided by the Lions Gate Bridge. 2. Most who dwell on the North Shore today live there because they prefer the automobile to mass transit and consider it a key com- ponent of their respective lifestyles. 3. Our billion dollar ALRT system will never be of any use or service to North Shore residents until it is extended to the North The D.V.A. recommendation of &@ new bridge, tunne! or tunnel- bridge connecting the Upper Levels to the mainland peninsula should include a mass transit corridor and should be designed in such a way that it would move through traffic away from Vancouver's downtown In considering whether or aot this is a positive idea, you should think of the alternative; what would happen to downtown Van- couver and North Shore business if the Lions Gate Bridge were sud- denly put out of commission? History tells us that prior to the Lions Gate Bridge the District of North Vancouver was In receiver- Pp. For civil defence reasons alone we should at feast examine a third crossing of Burrard Inlet and then decide the form it should take as related to design and firancing. The tunnel connecting Hong Kong to Kowloon paid for itself in two years and currently shows such a handsome profit that they're now building a second. E.A.
