ANITA ZAENKER Teens dared to fight » INKING, driving READER’S DIGEST recenily issued a challenge to high schools across Canada .— to develop the best student-run program against teenage drinking and driving. Through a grant from the Reader’s Digest Foundation of Canada, a total of $100,000 in university scholarships will be awarded — $5,000 to each of 20 winning schools whose students develop the best programs to stop their peers from drinking and driv- ing or from getting into a car with a drinking driver. The high school challenge has rallied support from numerous educational, civic, safety and community organizations. The Canadian Association of Prin- cipals has agreed to administer the program. Other groups, including the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police and the Addiction Research Foundation, will par- ticipate on the judging panel. “The idea is simple,'’ says Ralph Hancox, president of the Reader’s Digest Foundation of Canada. ‘‘We think that harness- ing the brains and creativity of teenagers themselves is the best way to get on top of the problem. “And it’s a serious one. Accor- ding to figures from the Traffic Injury Research Foundation, motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death among people under 25,’’ Hancox ex- plains. Participating schools are free to enter any program that students feel will work to stop drinking and driving. Programs must have been conducted and reported to Reader’s Digest by March 2, 1987. 39 - Wednesday, December 3, 1986 ~ North Shore News 1olin students get top TWO NORTH Vancouver violin students were awarded top marks after their Royal Conservatory Music exams recently.
