The view is that Canada can lead in this, and possibly develop a hydrogen-based economy,’’ said Paul Howard, vice president of operations at Ballard. The fuel cell produces electricity from hydrogen or methanol. The advantages acccrding to Howard, are an environmentally benign fuel source — no noise, no pollution. The waste product is pure water. “It’s the clean fuel for the next century. We’re working on polymer plastic fuel cells and reducing the amount of platinum needed as a catalyst for the cell. The problem in the past has been expense. We’ve worked out a cost reduction of 50 per cent from the stage the technology was at in the 60s,’’ said Howard. Howard sees commercial use of the new cells two to five years away, although prototype units are available. Applications include remote powering stations and radar sites in the North for the military. The Department of National Defence has sponsored research for the past three years at Ballard. On the North Shore in various configurations over the past 10 years, the company is today doing $3.5 million a year in contract work and employs 40 technicians and professionals. nea SEE THROUGH the many mysteries of glass with Timothy M.
