A8 - Friday, July 20, 1984 - North Shore News Do they believe in private enterprise or not? OHN TURNER having turned tail and decid- ed not to run in Capilano, your scribe feels obliged to deal with something really big. Like the bed and breakfast issue. It must be admitted that this great national matter does not prevent the matrans of Martini Mountain fr having a good night’s sle¢e' But that’s the trouble with politics these days. We ignore the fundamentals. We talk about lona What’s-her-name when we should be talking about extending the West Van sea walk. lf B&B caught on in Canada, it would be a cultural advance equal to the invenuon of the hamburger. Hell, you’d be able to peddle across the country for half of what it costs now. And that’s why the North Shore should be setting an example. Don’t we believe in national unity? When | asked Municipal Clerk Doug Allan whether B&B was permitted in West Van he was a bit vague. Then he came up with an answer that caused Collins to have a mirthquake. In West Van, he = said, ‘teverything is prohibited that isn’t allowed.’’ You would think that Mayor Derrick Humphreys would be a fighter for B&B, he being a former Brit and a member of the Churchill Society and all that. But he 1s somewhat un-Churchilhan on the issue. ‘*E retired behind the fact that you may have paying guests,’’ he said. ‘‘There is a bylaw that you can have two paying boarders in a house. But in West Van, people ee get this ht strai by Doug Collins STUDENTS, JAPANESE VISITORS Capilano College looks for accommodating residents CAPILANO COLLEGE is looking for North Shore residents willing to provide accommodation for students attending the school. The greatest need is for billets for 27 Japanese stu- dents who will arrive a week from today for a three-week English immersion course. The post-secondary in- stitution is looking for indi- vidual billets for the female students, who regularly at- tend Cap College’s sister col- lege in Okasaki, Japan. If you can provide billet space for the three-week duration of the course, preferably within a reason- able distance of the college, contact Nick Collins at 986- 1911 (local 326). The college’s student union is also looking for names to add to its housing list for longer-term students. ‘“‘These are particularly tough times for students with the combination of SUBARU SUMMER 2 DOOR HARDTOP GRAND LUXE MODEL 4 Speakers * AM/FM Stereo & Halogen Lights a Tachomete: * Metallic Parnt # Remote Trunk Retease * Velour Upholstery * Tinted Glass * Front Wheel Drive w Tilt Steering and Much more! You know it. It is clear that the denizens of Martini Mountain would develop a case of nerves if the lower classes on Marine Drive started hanging out B&B signs. The politicians dance around this one as if they’d been asked to hop across a bed of hot coals. Mayor Jack Loucks of North Van City as good as said: ‘‘B&B if necessary, but not necessarily B&B.’’ I hope he doesn’t talk to Mackenzie King in his sleep. There are no good reasons not to have B&B. The motehers and hoteliers may object, but they can be smoked out with one question: Do they believe in private unemployment and cuts to financial aid,’’ says Marc Rovner. ‘‘Students need help.”’ Anyone who can provide accommodation for students is asked to telephone the col- lege (986-1911) between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday to Friday to leave the names for the Housing Register. enterprise or don’t they? There’s also the point that a person’s home is supposed to be his castle. Jt isn’t, of course, as the North Van chicken incident has shown. But that doesn’t mean that the B&B brigade should surrender. The B&B thing shows that all this True North Strong and Free stuff is so much bilge. We are so. over- regulated that we're not much better off than Paviov’s dogs. The Swedes are similarly afflicted, which is why they never laugh. Try being a Swede some time and see whether you laugh. The British are supposed to be a meek lot, but even the socialists couldn't kill B&B. If anyone tried to tel! a Limey PANNA NAV EAR NM ONT oH The North Shore’s IGGES he couldn’t put up a-~B&B sign there’d be a revolution. There are more B&B signs there than raindrops. You’re lucky if a B&B lady doesn’t grab you by the collar and pull you into her parlor as you’re passing by. I’ve seen streets where every house in sight had a B&B sign decorating the front window. As I say, the North Shore has a big chance here. On its behalf, | shall attend John Turner’s first big rally and put the vital question: ‘‘Wot you think about Bed and Breakfast, mate?”’ P.S. Memo to Brian Holl- tpgton of North Van: the plural of Limey is Limeys, not ‘‘Limies’’. Proper nouns ending in ‘y’ simply add ‘s’. Thank you. SPA EXTRAVAGANZA Sat. July 21, Sun.
