Al6 - Sunday, November 20, 1983 - North Shore News Slow start to recycling program THE ACCEPTANCE to the North Shore-wide curb-side recycling pick-up program hasn’t been aS great as originally anticipated. But at least one of the reasons cited by the manager of International Paper In- dustries Ltd. — the weather — is understandable. ‘We've had nothing but rainy weather since we started,’’ says Emmie Leung. The curb-side pick-up pro- gram, one of the largest recycling programs under- taken in the province, started Nov. 7. Since then the trucks have made the rounds, picking up bundled newspapers. But they’ve suffered, Leung, from some misconceptions. One is that bundled papers will be picked up at the same time as gar- bage. While the recycling trucks follow the same routes as the garbage trucks — on the same days they travel much more quickly because there isn’t as much demand so far for their services. Residents who are used to putting out their garbage minutes before the garbage trucks arrive and who try to do the same with their newspapers, are finding newspapers aren’t collected because that truck has already passed. The way around that, says Leung, is to make = sure newspapers are set Out early on the same day the garbage goes out. A second misconception 1s that because the program 15s called a curb-side service, the says Searn Menenin A apne on Seats Capilano bundled newspapers should be left on the curb. Not so, says Leung. Newspapers should be put out alongside garbage cans. The program aims to col- lect recyclable newspapers from all 55,000 North Shore residences on a weekly basis. The project also includes two drop-off depots in West Vancouver, originally developed by SPEC, for newspaper, glass and cans. International Paper In- dustries Ltd., which initiated the program, is under con- tract with the City and District of North Vancouver, and the Municipality of West Vancouver for this service. Also lending financial sup- port to the program are Greater Vancouver Regional Distnct, SPEC, and Alcan Canada Products Limited, as part of ongoing efforts to assist recycling development in Canada. The program is expected to result in a number of benefits to the municipalities and its residents; elt is estimated that there will be a saving to the municipalities in garbage disposal costs of approx- imately $300,000 a year. e International Paper In- dustries Ltd. 1s building a new recycling depot on the North Shore which will mean 10 new jobs.‘ ¢ Residents are able to get rid of all their unwanted newspapers easily while con- tributing to the economy of the municipality and the clean environment. IPI has five new, specially- designed, blue trucks on the newspaper pick-up routes, and is asking for the coopera- uion of all the residents to make the program a success. Residents are asked to bun- die newspapers and place them beside the garbage con- tainers on the regular garbage pick-up days.
