B7 - Wednesday, November 9, 1983 - North Shore News HE entertainment THERE AREN’T many middle-aged men who can call themselves ‘Frankie’ and still get away with it, but part of Frankie Avalon’s charm is that he’s been able to keep his fans (the ma- jority of the audience is middle-aged women) while poking fun at both his and their anachronism. Avalon is an interesting mix of show-biz glitz and common sense. He’s been able to do what few in the business can by keeping an active entertainment career going as well as a very active family life (he has eight kids). He is fit and tanned, runs four miles three or four times a week and plays golf. ‘‘It’s a job’’ he says practically, cali- ing his fitness his ‘maintenance’ program. Whatever the secret, it works. Avalon’s show is full of fun and bounce. He believes a live performer is paid to entertain, not just stand up and sing, so his show is filled with silly jokes, simple tap without the taps, the soapy songs that made him famous, and even some trumpet playing. Limiting his travelling show to about three months a year gives Avalon more time to work on other projects. ‘‘! don’t rely on nostalgia,’’ he says, “‘It’s just there,’’ and’ yet he does nothing to quell the nostalgia craze that’s stood him in such good stead. Upcoming movie projects in- clude a new ‘beach’ movie with Annette Funicello and another film to be called The Rock Garden, which will be a re-creation of a 90 day bus tnp of the old days with Frankic, James Darren, Bud- dy Holly, and a cast of thousands of young pop music hopefuls “lt can be an important film because it shows a side of show business pcopic don't know too much about,”” like the insecunmty of trying to make wt and the black-white resentments and prejudice. at ALL. While in North Vancouver Avalon plans to work on material for his next travell- ing show. It’s not an easy task because he spends about five years putting together a show, and even then ‘‘it’s never finished,’’ because he works so hard to keep the show entertaining. “*No one ever walks out of my show going ‘My God, what a voice!’ and I don’t ex- pect that, I think a performer should perform.’’ ‘it’s a tough racket to stay at the top,’ he says, adding that there are few who can do it. Johnny Mathis is one, Sinatra another. ‘‘Sinatra - he was the man - any pop singer is trying to do him,”’ and Avalon ts no excepuon. ‘‘You have a model, and then you find your own thing.”’ Avalon ts sad to see the end of the romantic singer in the nightclubs ‘‘We're talking about a business that’s passe, it’s gone °' Frankie Avalon ts one of the few crooning dinosaurs still around His entertaimng nightclub show at the Plazazz continues until Saturday For tickets or information call 984-0611 NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN, P) Royal 7 00, 9 30, SatSun 2 00 RUNNING BRAVE, P Royal 7 18. 918, SatcSun 2 00 Frankie still wows ‘em Video Machine includes Hours: Mon-Wed & Sat 11-8, Thurs & Fri. 11-9, Sun 127 NORTH SHORE VIDEO HUT —~— 1061 Marine Dr_,N_V. 984-0900 (across trom Wosks) NOW!
