Huntington was named treasury board critic as part of Mulroney’s first choice of official opposition spokesmen Wednesday. As treasury board critic Huntington, one of six B.C. Transit that the Citv opposes reductions in service, and that instead of reducing North Shore bus services, the provincially -run transit company should add a third SeaBus. Council’s action was a response to a_prehminary draft of B.C. Transit’s 1984- 85 Service. Plan. The City’s comments will be considered at a September 23 B.C. Transit meeting, City Engineer Alan Phillips told council, He said the changes are only “conjectural” at the moment, and wouldn't be implemented untl early 1984 if approved. B.C. Another proposal that raised council's hackles was to eliminate bus service on St. George and Chesterfield which Avenues, are presently served by the Marine Drive and Lynn Valley bus routes. Buses are only lightly used on these streets because they are so close to Lonsdale Avenue, according to B.C. Transit. Alderman Ralph Hall called the proposal to eliminate service on the two streets “retrogressive.” He said “it ts illogical to suggest a reduction of local service.” Alderman Frank Marcino said B.C. Transit was playing the old game of cutung service and then. because fewer people would use the more inconvenient system. using the decreased rider- ship to cut the service some more. “If we don't have the service then we'll have the bridges loaded with cars again,” he warned.
