B2 - Wednesday, August 25, 1982 - North Shore News From being Vancouver’s most eligible celebrity and a sport’s hero to working around the house in a quiet neighborhood of Delbrook might seem a bit of a downer to some, but Bobby Lenarduzzi has enjoyed the transition. The 27-year-old former North American Player of the year in the North American Soccer League and veteran of the Whitecaps has become much less high profile since those halcyon days of Soccer Bowl ‘79 and that suits him just fine. “TI haven't done anything spectacular this year, but I don't think ['ve screwed up either,” he says in describing his consistent and depen- dabie play as fullback under the John Giles’ coached side. But he did get married last December and has settled into a domestic life with a comfortable sigh. Content now to spend quite a bit of tame working around the house, Bobby Lenarduzzi is more than satisfied with his life He and Deanne, the daughter of Danny Veitch, former GM of the Whitecaps, are planning their futures for the time when the playing days are done The attractive couple are arranging to take a marketing program at BCIT come the fall although it’s as much something they want to learn more about as it is a definite career path. “I'm still not sure what I want to do when I finish playing, but both Deanne and I want to keep our options open.” At present, Deanne keeps herself busy as a_ realtor while Bobby toils his trade with the "Caps. Living the quiet family life comes easy for the fullback. The soccer playing Lenarduzzi family and parents have become legendary for the closeness in the homestead of East Vancouver. And it's something that's rubbed off, though he’s still “the apprentice” to his Dad who has been showing Bobby the ropes as far as being a handyman 1s con. cerned around their North Shore property. Beginning his playing career as a professional in by Andy Fraser Happy in suburbia Reading, England, Bobby Lenarduzzi was a member of the first Whitecaps team back in 1974 when, as he Says, “we were as much an all-star amateur team as professionals.” There have been many changes since those early days including the big years of "78 and "79 when Bobby became the celebrity sports star. He was an all-star, he won top honors as_ North American, the team won Soccer Bowl and he became a familiar face on TV commercials. Of course the glory had another side. At the same time he was being applauded by some, he was taking quite a rap from many of the fans. They almost seemed pleased to have the hand- some young star make a mistake so they could give vocal vent to their feelings. But things have quictened down lately.
