% C6 - Wednesday, August 19, 1981 - North Shore News The ice is too cold Juneau, Alaska, is fighting for its life. Alaska’s capital is under fire from a large portion of the state population to make a move to a chunk of land about 15 miles north of anchorage. Since more than half of the residents of Juneau depend on government jobs, the move will result in the death of the city. No wonder there’s panic. We did two things in Juneau — a tour by bus to the Mendenhall Glacier and a quick run around the shopping area to try and . spend some money. Don't miss the glacier tour, especially in mid- summer. On the way, we stopped at Steep Creek to watch the salmon spawn. Our bus driver took us to the side of the road and we had a good look. ‘Then he told us that you could get a better view from the other side of the road but he suggested that we pass it up. Why? Because it’s the BEAR’S DINING ROOM! Reluctant to disturb old Growly at lunchtime, we clambered back on the bus. The Mendenhall Glacier is quite a sight. It’s huge! And dangerous. Just ask the mountain climber who tried to walk across it, fell into a “tray el- b y Barbara McCreadie i crevice and ripped all the skin and nails off his hands as he tried to get out. He survived But many others haven't. Unless you want to ‘be dug out in the year 3000 along with the rest of the fossils, keep clear. The parks department . maintain a nice building with displays, telescopes and a 10-minute film. They will also take you on guided walks ‘through the trails surrounding the glacier, if you have the time. In- dependent tourists can take advantage of the walks but you won't have time if you're on a bus. The bus also takes you toa lovely church, which bor- ders on the campus of the University of Alaska. Behind the altar, a huge picture window gives a view of lake and trees that looks like something out of a jig-saw puzzle. A sign in the flower bed outside says, “Please Pick the Pansys”. Of course, there aren't any pansies but it does make you look at the clumps of wildflowers that have been carefully tran- splanted. Getting back to the glacier for a minute, you'll notice that the ice is in two colours — white and a rich deep blue. The blue stuff is compressed and because of the oxygen that has been forced out, it is extremely cold. The white stuff is our normal ice. Which leads me toa recipe.
