Cc - Sunday News, July 19, 1981 Sunday | Feature Home’ Photos & Text” by Eric Eggertson Life on: an. island. For some _Reople | that conjures. up visions of long ferry rides,” higher food prices, and water shortages. But for Jean and Ian, island life means a quick trip aver to Eagle Island, where they find seclusion from the city and closeness to ngture. The joys of life on an island Jean’s parents bought a summer cottage on the island in 1928, and retreated there for weekends and summer vacations. Jean and Ian moved there twelve years ago, after razing the cottage and constructing a _ Split-level. home for their family on the same spot. The cottage .was perched , on a rock, but the new house. is balanced on two rocks covering most of the property. : They decided against blasting the rock, and so had to fit’ their house .on the existing terrain. The front yard slopes down to the water where the rocks are oo worn smooth from the + pounding waves. _ The sea birds constantly flying by. provide inspiration for one of their.sons, who paints carefil:,,studies of birds. The boys” “built their own “house” ouft:,on the rocks where they could get away fromit a _But on Baple Island there is‘ little reason to get any further away from things, the waterforms ts own barrier to intrusion. Each family has a small boat for ferrying passengers “and supplies over the’ ‘Short ~~ stretch of water. Con- - struction on ‘the house was, _ complicated by thg-need to | barge supplids over;= = Inside, the kitchen and dining area is on one ievel, ‘the living room a few steps up, and the sleeping quarters a few more steps up. Most rooms look out on a view of Eagle Harbour and the boats sailing back and forth. The living room is far the sunniest room in the house, and has become ihe favourite haunting of two cals. Some of the furniture in the living room was carved ‘from an arbutus by Jean's father. He also carved the jolly viking who greets people at the front fanding --- Now that most of their sons have flown the coop, Jean spends a lot of time in the garden cultivating plants, some of which were planted in the days of the cottage. A grape vine that used to cover the southern face of the cottage now hangs. over a gateway in the garden. Living og an island is as much an attitude as it is a physical state. The only vehicles on the tsland are bicycles and wheelbarrows, the ‘latter used to carry groceries from ihe dock Any small inconvenience in getting to EAgle Island 1s more .than rewarded by the lack of car traffic and general ‘intrusion from the world outside. cee A A EAT EO OFTEN RO SON IO TOE RTOO A HOPE MERON eo F ad 16% ASSUMABLE!
